Insulated Underware
« on: December 19, 2009, 10:15:49 PM »
I have worn Duo-Fold heavyweight insulated under ware for years. It's the gray stuff and so old I can't read the tag. Ordered a couple sets of D'Fold replacement garments and am disappointed. This new stuff is cold against my skin. I do not care for it at all. Looks like the original gray stuff is history. I am looking to replace the Duo-Fold with something equivalent to the original D'Fold or better. Does anyone have actual use experiences with insulated under ware and can guide me in a search for something better? Looking for something near the same price range if possible.

Yup the original Duo-Fold was fine stuff. I didn't realize it was gone. They make or at least used to make fleece underwear. I got mine from an outfit that used to be a sponsor here but isn't any longer. It's the warmest stuff next to my skin I've ever felt. As soon as it touches your skin it feels like it's an electric blanket.

I doubt the Duo-Fold brand of it matters and any fleece underwear you can find will likely be the same. Nothing I've ever worn comes even close to matching the performance of it.

I was disappointed to find that the duo fold underwear is now made differently. Like you, I have some "ancient" Duo fold that I'm still wearing. Had to go to poly prop. Recently I saw that Sportsmans Guide had army cold weather long underwear for sale, and have read good reviews from other Forums. I may be giving that a try.

Well, with not too much to go on I believe I'll give the Cabela's mid weight Polartec a try. I'm surprised we didn't get much feed back on the subject.

Face it, many folks are into the latest-greatest, regardless of overall effectiveness. I don't do anything Cabelas anymore, and believe me, years ago, I could get tons os stuff, just from my accummulated club points. But truly the quality has declined for much of their clothing. I know 2 people who used to work for  Cabelas, "back in the day." They quit, when the politics of merchandising got too much for them. So much mediocre merchandise is shipped from china, and the Cabelas labels are sown in.

Try Sierra Trading Post.  They have various kinds of polyester, polypropylene, silk and wool long underwear at discounted prices.  I needed a lightweight polyester base layer and found the Kenyon Silkweight longs at Sportsmans Guide at $10 a piece to work well.  In colder weather I usually wear wool longs over this base.

Kenyon Silkweight long underwear

If you want something like the old Duofold two layer stuff try the Medalist Merino Wool Blend stuff at Sportsmans Guide.  They come in two-packs and come out to $12 a piece.

I'm currently wearing some Comforttech.  I was just as happy with some really thin silk long undies.  I dress in layers so I start with the long underwear, then a pair of sweats then my regular cotton or poly cotton camo pants.  If I have to walk a lot or drag something out......I have to lose the jacket.

On top I usually wear a Under Armor heat gear T, then a sweater then my hunting jacket.

My key is....................warm boots.

I have, and use, two sets of duofold.  That being said, there is absolutely no debate, the Under Armor Cold Gear is dramatically better.  I've occasionally but duofold outside of the UA but I think a light fleece would be better because it would allow sweat to escape better.

Get a set of the UA cold weather gear and you will never think of duofold again.

30 years ago I use to wear wool but switched to the new poly stuff. For the last 3 years, I gone back to wool. Not the old itchie stuff, but merino wool. As a light weight base layer it keeps me warmer and works better at keeping me cooler when it gets warmer too. I use as a base then add my poly fleece as needed. I even replaced my summer poly tees with super fine merino. Its not near as stuffy feeling when it gets hot and keeps me dryer and it doesn't stink even after several days wear. Sheep have to wear wool all year long why can't we. Google merino wool and check it out. Cabelas has it but the cheapest place is campmor. http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___91780

I went with the Cabela's mid weight Polartec. It is much warmer than the Duo-fold I've been wearing for years. Going to have to get the light weight Polartec for general 'round the property use. Mid weight will be for hunting, etc. Can't imagine what the expedition weight must be like.

I work on trucks outdoors year round. I have come to love my Poly Propylene long johns. My only problem is they make me sweat. To remedy this, i wear a thin t-shirt, and thin long john pants.

What is amazing is how long duofold lasts. Some of the turtlenecks in my closet have to be going on 15 years old. In the spring and fall they are often worn as an outside garment which takes a lot more abuse.

I've worn "Damarts" for the last 25 winters. They don't make you "sweat" in warm climates, are lightweight, and work in the coldest of temperatures. (I bought my first pair when the Minnesota "Vikings" made "ads" for them back in the '80's.) The only thing you have to watch, is they collect "static electricity" when indoors and can "discharg" unexpectedly ;D.
