Where are you from?   Put your location  in by yr name... this can effect what information we can propose.  Some people chop into ground in places and use dry dirt if no thawing , but if thawing use salt or glycol or waxed dirt   or just go to completely snow sets with snow covering.... or got to cable restraints or snares  if legal in your state.  In any event location please.

Waxed paper, cover hulls, and cubbies or other protected spots so no more snow falls on the trap.

What you need is a mentor that has experience... contact the New YORK tRAPPERS ASSOC and find a trapper in your area that is experienced in the animals you want to trap in snow and contact him.. it will save you alot of headaches and you will be started in right direction.... if you dont belong to the assoc   join and find out what is going on and the information nowdays is alot and people arent as tight lipped as back in the 50s ect...  let us know how you progress and  what happens   ,.. good luck

I have used calcium chloride, it is an additive to get concrete to heat up and set in cold weather. It produces heat when moisture is present. Will melt snow and ice. It is a granule product like fertilizer. That was up in AK. In the south now I just use salt. All the heat is not needed since the ground here doesn't freeze solid for more than a few days if at all.
