The minimum legal bullet diameter must be .358" so that disqualifies the 7.62x39.  There was once a .358x39 and it would be legal to use. Ruger even had a Mini-35 chambered for that round. They're pretty rare and I have never found or seen one. The wildcat version is still available and I think it was mentioned in the Wildcats topic here in our IN forum. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

Actually the 7.62x39 is legal as long as it is in the form of a handgun with a barrel longer than 4".   :o

You guys don't have to have straight walled cases like here in Illinois? That's cool.

Nope, it can be bottle-necked as long as it fits the diameter and length requirements. ;)

I had an @issing match with a clerk at Dicks in Avon about this a couple weeks ago. I love to argue if I know that I am right!hahaha. Especially when the guy had folks around and was first being loud so he could be heard. He started changing his wording of the regulations and trying to say that they were not that way a 3 or 4 years ago, I said ya your right there but you are so wrong now.

I had a similar conversation at Wally world couple years ago. The person working the sporting goods, ammo deptartment told me it was legal to use any rifle you want. Also stated she regularly uses a 30-30 for deer. This was stated in front of a guy buying a hunting license. I looked at him and he almost busted out laughing.

He told me he knew for a fact! He had a really good friend that was on the DNR State Legislature. I told him that for one his friend was lying to him about his duties in his position at the DNR and second, you both are wrong!

He proubly works the gate at a park. Just to show you unless you read it in the regs, it may just be someones opinion and not the law. Always read up and stay legal.

I think some of the problem stems from the regs being written by too many who don't understand either hunting or firearms.  This is why we ended up with discrepancies such as a 35 Remington being a legal deer round when fired from a handgun such as the Contender and yet the same round isn't legal when fired from a rifle.  Most of the deer my son and I have taken over the last few years have been taken with a Contender in either 7TCU or 357Herrett neither of which would be legal from a rifle.  Yes, wording of the regs have changed over the years to help clarify intent, but I don't think the basic regs have changed from what was first intended when they were first implemented.

The other part of the problem is trying to make conversation with anyone at Dick's or Walmart.   ;D  Neither of them get my money any more and I avoid a lot of the head shaking frustration.   ::)
