A Good Season
« on: December 20, 2009, 03:24:31 PM »
I will have a hard time topping this years harvest. I guess being laid off has it's advantages(?) On the bear I used the bonded 300 grain shockwave and 130 grains 777, on the deer I used the hornady 325 FTX over 120 grains BH209. The missouri buck ran about 40 yards, the bear and the minnesota buck dropped in their tracks. Thank you all here for your advice, I have become a much better hunter since I started hunting with a smokepole. Here are a few pics.

If you're going to be unemployed, deer season is the best time of year. Nice bucks & bear!!

I'm in that same boat - would like to be working - but it's been a good season! One doe with muzzleloader, and... another doe, and four bucks with the 30-30. Here's the best one, taken Dec 16:

That a good one yellowtail!, Don't you know you need at least a 30/06 or a 7mag to kill a deer ;D
The only time I took the /06 out this year was when it was raining, I didn't know if blackhorn would go bang, it did after three days of rain when I shot out the load, I am afraid I have been converted to muzzleloader only  :D

I hunted with a muzzleloader only - first a CVA Staghorn, then current Buckhorn - for three years. Then, one season... I had TWO deer resurrect and run off on me while I was fumbling with a primer, reloading. Now I know it was my fault - both were shot waaaay too high in the shoulder, missing back - but at that point, I decided I wanted a second shot... so I traded off a pistol for the Marlin. I like it.

Still carry the CVA during blackpowder season, and it's my back-up rifle.

I want to learn how to make sausage at home, but there is a butcher shop here that makes awesome sausage and beer sticks, so it is just too easy to bring it there.

Speaking of Jalapeņo Venison Sausage, I had some at the New Years party at my brother-in-law's house the other night. It also had some cheese in it, but it wasn't cheddar. Some kind of a white cheese. Delicious I'm telling you. ;) Although, we're talking some major heart burn after eating it. Just about made an old Skunk cry. :'( It was worth it though.:D
