Hunter Shoots 4X4 Bull Elk...In OHIO!
« on: December 20, 2009, 03:34:41 PM »
Not making this up, was in Cols. Dispatch during deer gun week. Somewhere in Bellefontaine area (West Central.) May have come up from KY or W VA (not likely) or escaped from nearby farm where they're allegedly raised. Shooter allowed to keep meat, etc.; no foul.

If it came from a Game Farm and its not native to Ohio , its fair game , the ODNR turned loose a few Eastern Elk as part of a test group down in the southern part of the state some years ago , and some have come over from Ky , but I don't see them making it that far NW .

Should be some good eat'en though .  ;D

Ya I too would wet my leg seeing one walking up behind me or something.  I don't think id be a quick kill with a 357 Max LOL.  I know they do release them in KY.  I also know there are at least two farms in Ohio that raise them.  Probably more.  Hope they think twice about adapting them to Ohio.  Ya fun to hunt...  But not a great place for them to live.  The woods is spotty up mid Ohio and would promote lots of totaled cars or deaths.  Southern Ohio would be fine for them, however the thought of one seeing me first...  haha

There are not suposed to be any here so they assume it escaped from a farm. We used to have a guy near here that had alot of wild animals, bear, fallow deer, mountain lions, ect. I could have shot 1 of his fallow deer that got out but didn`t. He wasn`t so lucky with some of the others that got out.

Where are these elk from Kentucky moving into? I work in Kentucky and haven't even heard of any this far north.
Not denying it, just curious. Most of my hunting buddies are from Kentucky or WV, and we would love to see an elk.

Fred

ODNR considers any animal that is not native or well established in Ohio ( they made a season for ) a Pest or Vermen ( like wild hogs ) and are to be culled .

There are a few exceptions , like Black Bear and some others , that they want to expand the populations on .

Exotics ( spelling ? ) that have been imported by Game Farms fall in as Vermen in the eyes of the state , as I have been told by many Game Wardens , they don't want these animals spreading nasty bugs to the locals .  ???
