While I have 26" and 22" 20 ga I've found the 12 ga go wanting at pawn shops.  I have bought a couple in pretty good shape for $40 as people don't like them as they kick.  Since lead is very high I got to loading 12 ga with 7/8 oz and I load 690 round balls which kick quite a bit less than slugs.  Bottom line is 12 ga is very light to carry and 7/8 loads pattern very well. Used nguns are dirt cheap.

Yep, sounds like you came to the same conclusion I did. That is, for the money spent, the single shot 12ga may be the most useful weapon ever developed. I think of it as the SUV of my gun collection. from moose to mallards this gun has it all covered. As a bonus, since they are very cheap used, I will hunt harder with a pardner than I ever would using one of my more expensive guns.

Single shot shotguns-Tools I'd be very reluctant to give up!  A 12ga. 22" Turkey model stays in my pickup year 'round, keep a divided shoulder bag with 25 #6's, 15 buckshot and 10 slugs to go along with it. Within reason (most anything short of a major insurrection) I can deal with just about anything that happens my way with my New England.

you found what i did many years ago, i shot trap  3nights a week and several  weekend events , the 7/8 oz loads  burn up  birds  up to 20 yds   real well with out a beating, when the powder titewad came out i started usein it for the 7/8oz and  reall havent straded to far,  i do go 1 oz for  handicap targets,  havent used 1 1/8oz in years for anything  as i say  speed kills in shotgun loads , get it there fast and  it will smoke anything ,   (plus if your a reloader your a tite ass like the rest of us hahah)  ;D

I just ended up with a twelve for christmas. They dont kick as bad as I have heard. I was shooting the low brass 2 3/4 shells with 1 1/8 shot load. Trying to decide what loads will be least destructive on grouse. hmm,

Mine shoots so well it completely replaced my 16 gauge double and has kept my Mossberg 500 12 in the rack at home for several years.
