Author Topic: Are Bell and Carlson Carbelite Rifle Stocks good for the price? (Read 4622 times)

I was thinking about refinishing the stock on my 700 BDL. Like you guys say, it's probably cheaper and it's a lot easier to buy a replacement stock. What do you guys think of these Bell and Carlson Carbelite Rifle Stocks? They're in my price range. Thanks!

I hate B&C stocks, wouldn't have one on my rifles if they offered to pay me to use them.

OK I'm a little bit prejudiced against them.

I have B&C on a plain vanilla 700 ADL in .270. I had to file a wee bit of material in front of the trigger guard for a good fit. I am pleased with my stock and the results I get in the field and at the range. Not sure if I have the Carbolite stock or not. Mine is a drab green with black webbing.

The drab green with black webbing was the one I was looking at. It comes with the raised cheek piece like the BDL comes with.

Gee Bill, let us know how ya really feel

They are good stocks if you can get one at a good price. Seems with any aftermarket stock, it can be hit or miss in regards to quality control.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who has had issues with B&C stocks. Mine was canted a good 10 degrees from right to left on the bottom after I put my Savage 10FP in it. I also figured that I'd need to skim bed it, but after the initial dissapointment I figured that I'd shoot it and see if I was going to keep the stock or send it back. My groups with BHA 168gr opened up from 3/4" avg to about double that for the two groups I shot. I took the rifle home and got rid of the stock. Haven't had anything other than a McMillan since, and it is worth the extra money IMO. That being said I'm waiting on a Manners stock as I type this.

Not saying that all of B&C's stuff is garbage, I just got a example on my first try that looked like it was assembled by a guy who wasn't qualified to work the ball-pit at Chuck-E-Cheese's. Haven't bothered to try any of their stuff again. As always, YMMV.

Looks like an H-S Precision take-off of a 700P.

diggler is correct, its a H-S PST12 stock I bought from Midway to replace the sps-varmint stock

My B&C is worry free but I have a McMillan that the barrel is not centered in the channel. Both rifles are Rem 700s.

Not super uncommon, but it can be rather frustrating. I'm assuming you have the rifle pillar and glass bedded in it, not trying to insult anyone's intelligence or start a flame war, just wondering that's all.

I'd be more than happy to trade you a B&C for your McMillan.

I bought a B&C stock one time, for a very common rifle, and had LOTS of problems fitting it. I woudn't buy one again.

You may be better off delaying your purchase for several months, saving up your spare change, and buying an HS Precision, pillar bedded. They are somewhat expensive, but I bought one and it fit perfectly.

Like you I've owned a grand total of one. Wow what a horrible experience that was. It was a replacement Model 7 stock and I finally gave it away but felt sorry for the fellow who took it at that free price.

I've held rifles wearing them many times since and while none have been as bad as that first one I bought all have turned me off to them to the extent I refuse to buy any rifle wearing one PERIOD.

I thought at all H-S stocks had an aluminum bedding block (as do a lot of B&C's). They do fit a lot better usually, and are more than enough stock for most Remington shooters. I had two H-S stocks and they fit the rifle well. Even after I sold the one and bought the other, after bedding the second stock I took the rifle back to the range and made whole 1 click adjustment to get back to POA/POI at 100yds.

You can generally find a good, used one on the Snipers Hide for around $225-250 if you are a bit short on cash for a new one and are having a hard time locating a used one.

I have one that came with my Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight in 338-06 A-Square. It’s a Bell & Carlson Medalist colored tan with black web. Very well fitting and gives me excellent accuracy.

I would try another Bell & Carlson Medalist.

I have two of Bell and Carlesons Target/Varmint stock. Both were good fits, well made, and the green with black spider web finish. I would highly reccommend them. I replaced my .308 win that came with the Hogue stock with one. The hogue stock gave me 3 inch groupings at 50 yds. With the B&C stock I get sub moa 5 shot groups at 100 yds.

I do quite a bit of fitting barreled actions to stocks. Some of the worst have been B&C. Lately I have been using Boyds. They are reasonably priced and look good. I recently replaced the cheap rubber coated stock on my 700 tactical .308 with one of Boyds stocks. Groups are half the size .44 average for 6 five shot groups so far and it looks great. I buy mine unfinished and glass bed them so I am not sure what the finished ones look like.
