Hammer spur yes/no??
« on: December 21, 2009, 10:30:12 AM »
Do most of you equip your Handis with a hammer spur??   I know it makes it easier to cock/uncock.  But it can be done without the spur.  I recently had an issue with light primer strikes on some handloads.  After exhausting every possibility, I removed the spur, and the problem went away.  Is this common??

I've got them on a couple of rifles and have used them without it also.

It's not a big deal if your not wearing gloves, but that can present a problem if you are and need to pull back on that hammer while having the rifle shouldered and staring at that big buck through your scope.

I've given some thought about it maybe causing a misfire, but until that happens I'll continue to use them.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Replace the weak hammer spring Jeff, that IS a known issue even on some new firearms, hammer extensions aren't that I'm aware of.  ;)

Mayhaps I should look elsewhere.  The spring you mention Quick may be faulty.  I really want to use the spur.  I know that TC does not want ou to use a spure on the Encore.

I have never had a problem with them but I don't have them on any of my handies and some of my scopes are so low I had to bob the hammer spur. But I normally do not have to wear thick gloves here in Kantucky.

Heavy hammer springs solve the Encore issue, I never had a problem with mine with an aluminum extension.  Wolff makes good springs for H&Rs, get the single coil model, it's available from them direct or from Midway, Brownell's carries the OEM spring also.  ;)

I had one on a Rossi that came loose and moved so that it was hitting the barrel release and causing FTF once I discovered what it was and repositioned and loctited it I have had no further problems. I also have them on all but two of my handi's.

When I replaced scopes with red dots I no longer needed the hammer spur, but I left them on.....they're just "Handi".
