308 dicks sporting special problem
« on: December 21, 2009, 02:57:40 PM »
Hey all, my wife picked me up one of those 308 bull dicks specials saturday. It was the last one they had  and the floor model. Today I got to look at it and decided to take the forearm off and give the action a good cleaning. When i removed the forarm,to my suprise the barrel has so much slop I would be afraid to shoot it!! Im talkin up and down and side to side. How can something like that pass quality controll? Now dicks says all sales final, even the junk ones so send it back to h and r. Will h and r  reimburse me for shipping and fix my dicks special? Will they shoot it and send me the target to prove their two inch at 100 yard guarentee? All my other h and r guns are great, my ultra slugger has opened many eyes with outstanding accuracy. Any suggestions on what to expect ? Thanks in advance for the help.

I haven't taken the fore arm off mine, but I did the JB bore paste thing and put a Nikon pro staff 3X9X40 on it and was shooting 1.5" at 100 yards with rem core lokt 150 gr. Took a 3 point buck at 160 yards with it.

Could it be that one of the KNOWLEDGEABLE, Dicks sales people allowed someone to swap barrels in the store, in order to get a prettier stock for a rifle of a different caliber.

That's easy to check, last three digits of the frame serial number should be marked on the left side of the barrel underlug.  ;)

I had a customer recently come in with a brand new Marlin......He said it wouldn"t cycle.....sure enough the carrier was faulty.I said" take it back to where you bought it".He informed me that Dicks wouldn't replace it or fix it.This surprised me to no end. When a customer pays the Dicks price he also gets the Dicks service.......

I gave up on Dick's after waiting over 45 min. to be waited on to buy a gun, then being told the guy was going on his "dinner break" and would be back in 1/2 hour.  I emailed the folks and was sent a terse reply that convinced me that they had nothing that I need.  Now this finalizes that.

My local shop might charge $30.00 more but he also looks after me.

You are 100% correct my friend.....that clerk doesn't give a crap....He's there to make a paycheck and thats it.The local shops not only have a personal touch, but also need to warantee what they sell or repair.Bad word of mouth in a small town can be a gunshop killer. ;)

Yes, they'll have to fit a new barrel. Contact H&R CS, ask them to cover return shipping and pack it up good and ship it back to them for repair using the UPS call tag they send ya. I don't know if Madison closes down for Christmas, but they may, and the factory may also until the first week of the new year. Just out of curiosity, was it made in Gardner or Ilion?

Walmart has the same return policy on firearms which is they won't, so it's not unique to Dick's.  :-\

Yeah....Wallys is just as bad....Iv'e even had guns from Wallys come in for repair that had plastic parts in them instead of the cast  or steel parts that are in the guns I buy from the wholesalers.Cheaper.....

This raises the question. Are the H&R guns that Dicks sell the same gun that Joes Gun Shop sells? Or is it a "lower grade of gun"

IMHO, there really is nothing that you can do to a Handi to make it a lower grade gun. Blueing is poor, stocks are generally pallet wood or Choate standard, sights are Williams, there are very few parts, barrels are nothing special. There does seem to be some weak QC. Not sure if Dick's is paying less for rifles that have poor fitting or if the new team just sucks. $110 shotguns look every bit the same quality, or better, than $250 rifles.

Wallyworld actually sells a better quality 10/22 built just for them than the base model. More desirable too.

IMO they are not any less quality than other handi's I think his was just one that made it through the cracks. Mine is as close to a tack driver as you could get with factory ammo. If and when I start reloading I'm sure I could reduce my group size. Which right now is about 1.5"

UPDATE, UPDATE, Took the gun back to dicks with the forarm off to prove my point.  One manager looks at the gun then he opened the action and says its loose because the forarm is off. I laughed and told him to latch the barrel and shake the gun. Fool would not even make eye contact with me or respond to me. Then he and another go into the back and get another handi in 243, take off the forarm and guess what, I GET A NEW GUN. Funny though the other dick special manager left the area not to be seen again. However manager Kevin I worked was pleasent and tried his best to help me out. Now I just have to go to a different store to pick it up because it was their last one. Hope this next one is TIGHT and RIGHT!! Oh I will be taking a phillips screwdriver with me just to be sure. Thanks for all the funnies, it took the sting out of it.
GOOD HUNTIN!!
