Need some help
« on: December 22, 2009, 06:24:18 AM »
Alright guys i need your help. My wife and I just moved to Budapest, Hungary about 2 months ago. I grew up in Mississippi hunting/fishing/etc. so living in the middle of a city like Budapest is quite a change for me. Anyway I need a project. I am trying to find a new hobby to stay sane over here. I've thought about trying to pick up wood working, but don't really know where to start. This is really the only hobby/project/build it yourself kind of thing i could think of that I could do with few tools (hopefully) and no shop.....we live in a small apartment. So I guess I am asking for any pointers to get me started.....i was thinking about trying to get into carving or something....just to have some sort of project to work on. Any suggestions? Am I crazy for trying to get into this with my current situation? Thanks for any help you might offer.

Wow! That's quite a change of scenery.

Any woodworking projects will make a mess of some sort. Carving probably being the least messy. But do it in the kitchen or somewhere that you can clean the shavings up easily.

I'm not much into the carving but I would thnk a good set of sharp carving tools would be all you need to get started. Be careful and have fun.

I don't think you're crazy at all. A mans gotta have his distractions.

If you have an extra bedroom you could buy a Shop Smith. Just be sure to take up the carpet first. Dale

Try wood-burning or leather-burning. I dabbled in it a bit when I used to carve ducks. I think it's called pyrography. Make sure you get a unit with variable temp. if you want to do wood and leather.
