Contact(s): Your Local Wildlife Biologist or Greg Matthews, Regional Public Affairs Manager, Fitchburg: (608) 275-3317FITCHBURG – Snow on the ground and a relatively mild winter are positive signs for gun hunters looking at one final opportunity to bag a whitetail deer when the ‘Holiday Hunt’ begins Dec. 24 in the chronic wasting disease management zone (CWD-MZ) of southern and southeast Wisconsin.
Earn-a-Buck SeasonThe season runs for 11-days through Jan. 3, 2010, and hunters must first shoot an antlerless deer in order to “earn” a sticker allowing them to harvest an antlered deer. Hunters who have already qualified by shooting an antlerless deer during an earlier gun or archery season and have an unused buck sticker may harvest a buck.
Hunters who shot an antlerless deer during an earlier season should have received a buck sticker when they registered their deer.
RegistrationAll deer killed in the CWD Zone must be registered no later than 5:00 p.m. on the day after it was harvested within the unit of kill or adjacent unit of kill within the CWD-MZ.
Most of southern Wisconsin lies within the CWD-MZ. Hunters are advised to check the
2009 Wisconsin Deer Hunting Regulations pamphlet for more detailed information.
