gunsmithing books
« on: December 22, 2009, 02:24:44 PM »
I am looking for a good all around gunsmithing book that cover the basics.  And second book that covers rebarreling a bolt action.  Dad is looking to rebarrel his win. Model 70 in .270 to who knows what, yet.  He is already thinking about getting a lathe for some other work he is wanting to do and thinks it will come in handy for a rebarrel job.  I told him let me get some books and see what we need.

Thanks
MGM

The NRA gunsmithing books have some iteresting info. Ackleys book is good if somewhat outdated in some respects. Jerry Kuhnhausen doesn't have a shop manual for the M70 but there is one for the mauser and the two actions are very similar. I don't know where else to go. I've 2+ bookscases full and still feel a little meager at times. There are a couple of tomes sold by Brownells covering the barreeling process that are supposed to be really good but I forget which is which. I've not read either so really can give a reccomendation..

Look for Modern Gunsmithing by Roy Dunlap. I met him in Tucson years ago. This guy really knew his stuff. A copy may be hard to come by,but a lot of big libraries have it. If you find it in a library, and like it,you might want to be sure you don't lose it. I have heard the price for lost books may be kinda high. ;)

Ditto on Dunlap's book. It covers all areas of gunsmithing. If there's a better all-around book I haven't found it yet.
