I'm not very big (160 lbs.), and maybe that was some of my problem, but the first time I fired off a 500 grain bullet from a 45-120 blackpowder load, was the last time. I can't begin to describe what the recoil was like, and that was from a 12lb. C. Sharps. The only way I could handle that thing was to load it down to about 45-90 specs with a lighter bullet, and then I couldn't shoot from the bench. Had to use cross sticks. 45-120 is just too much, at least for me, but I wish you the best in your project. Besides, I reckon everybody ought to try it at least once.

its time.

You have made me SOOOOoooooo Happy I could cry!   :'(  :-*

The more of these great fun shooting cart-age guns we get out there the more load development we can do!  Soons I get my barrel mated up to it's new frame I'm gonna start with some 500 gr. GC's and 350 gr. RNFP's I got!   :D

Just remember, we like Lott a lot!   ;D

Does the black powder loads really kick that hard?  I used to shoot a 50 caliber T/C Hawken with a 350gr bullet over 100 grains of ffg and it wasn't bad at all.

BP loads in a weighted BC or in most if not all BPCR guns give a push, rather than the normal recoiling kick that centerfire smokeless powder loads do.  A 100 gr load of FFg is rather nice, to be quite frank about it.

Now if I still had a BC I would either just ream up to 45-90 or at the max go with the 45-110 since it is more historical than the 45-120.  I still have a lot of 500-gr Bison Busters, and 550-gr Creedmore bullets to load up and plenty of 45-90 empty brass left over from my Rolling Block rifle that I used to have as well.

Be safe and have fun.

Nothing that 20oz of #8 shot down the stock bolt hole, a custom fit limbsaver recoil pad plus a limbsaver slip-on pad wouldn't fix!

I can't see adding weight.  If I wanted a single shot that was to heavy to carry I'd buy a Ruger.

Me too, I owned one many years ago.  I sure wish I'd kept it.  It was brutal with hot loads.

It doesn't hurt Brian, I had my BC rechambered before I ever shot it, but I already had a 45-70 Handi, I may have felt different if the BC was my only 45-70 tho.  ;)

It's not my only 45/70 but it is the only h r 45/70 that I have. I might consider it with another barrell though. That way the bc would still be original if I wanted. I cant remember where I read but somewhere someone said that converting a regular Handi over would be a waste of time. Is this true?

The advantage the 45-120 using smokeless powder over the 45-70 is the same velocities can be achieved at much lower pressures, ~30-40kpsi for the 120 vs ~50kpsi for modern rifle 45-70 loads. You can see 45-120 Nitro Express velocities at AmmoGuide, data is from 22" thru 32" barrels, Hodgdon 45-120 data is done in a 24" barrel.

Here's where it all started...

Thanks Tim!  I don't remember ever reading that thread!  6 pages!  Wow!  :o  I'm gonna finish reading it when time permits...

But tell me, did Haywire ever do a 45-120?   ???

I'm looking at a (black) bear hunt again...  figure the 45-120, I prefer to call mine my "458 Sharps Nitro Express 3-1/4," with a 350 Hornady @ 2500 or the 500 gr RNFPGC's @ 2100 ought to do the trick...  :P

I couldn't find a post on Ian (Haywire Haywood) ever doing the 45-120, and noticed he hasn't been online here since September.  :-\
