Sunken cannon recovery (NOVA, I think)
« on: December 22, 2009, 04:36:46 PM »
A number of years ago (10, perhaps more or less), I think NOVA (definitely PBS) ran a show that documented the discovery of a Bahamaian wreck and the recovery of a highly decorated bronze octagonal cannon barrel.  They also found a number of large iron barrels but their boat was not large enough to raise any of them.

Supposedly, the barrel was going to be exhibited in the "Pirate Museum," somewhere in Florida.  I have never been able to track this down (either the barrel, the show or the museum.)  Does anyone have a clue to this story?  It definitely was not a Mel Fisher expedition as it post-dated the finding of the Atocha and he was a big name after that.

Thanks for any help.

They just found a Dahlgren cannon in the Texas City channel from the USS Westfield.
11 feet long and is at Texas A&M being restored. It was lost during the Civil War.
You can see it if you go to wtaw.com and search cannon on the site I don't no how to link it maybe DoubleD can do it

Lots of ways to link some simple some fancy.  Simplest, just copy the url from the address line of your browser and paste it like this.

http://www.wtaw.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3117:civil-war-cannon-unveiled-at-aam&catid=1:local&Itemid=13

You can learn the other ways later.

I looked for a while yesterday, George, but I didn't turn anything up that fit your description of the show.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.
