When I lived in SC a few years ago it was legal to use 22 rimfire on deer. I don't know if its still allowed.

Texas is center fire of any caliber, yes, even the .17 Remington, but my opinion is anything smaller than .243 is for varmits.

:? Hey Ihuntbucks in Alabama I think the regs read centerfire mushrooming ammo so .17 and 22 hornet are legal (they shouldn't be but they are).

NH is a no too. They specifically state .22 Rimfires. Im guessing the next rule book (our rule books run April to Apri) is gonna specifically say no 17 Rimfires either because you know some idiot will probably try. I also agree about .22 Centerfires.......Some guys like, but not me, but then again in New Hampshire, due to the high number of hunters per acre usually hunting in the southern part of the state, you want to drop a deer as quickly as possible. No fun shooting that trophy buck only to have him run off into another hunters kill zone. He made the kill shot, now its his!

LOL NH, so then i could hunt with a 96/17 in .17 hummer? Hmmm. LOL. I will stick with my .30-30 and .30-06. That is what deer were made to be kilt by anyways :-D

And how! My buddy had to sell his Marlin 336 for cash to fix his broken vehicle. He was sad to see it go. Now he is trying to convince the little lady that he "Needs another gun so I can fire the box of 20 30-30 rounds I still have left over."

. Of course there is the airhead at work who swears his 22 Mag will kill anything under the sun out to 5000 yards......but thats a whole different story!

Kinda, kinda not. It's not legal on any government owned land. It's also banned for use on private land in 3 of 9 game zones IIRC. In the other 6 however, it is legal IF hunting on privately owned land. Same restrictions apply to use of buckshot while still hunting (buckshot is mandatory for dog drives on both government and privately owned land).

On government land, for still hunting, the minimum is a centerfire .22 cal or larger.

Maryland's only restriction is that your rifle must develop at least 1200 ft/lbs at the muzzle. If your rimfire can do that, then it is OK. :eek: You might have a hard time convincing the game warden though. Most counties only allow shotguns anyway.

I know that a 22 cal. can kill a deer, but is it the right caliber for deer size game? In my opinion NO! I'm sure that there are a lot of ya's out there that have been successful doing so. The question is, how many animals have taken a bad hint with the 22 cal. and never recovered? With that same situation it may well have not gone to waste with a more fitting cal. for deer size game.

How many of you 22 cal. users have had deer hit and not recovered? I know it can happen with other larger cal. rounds but IMO the 22 cal. is not an efficent round.

The other problem I have is if a state does not allow it in the general firearms hunt on public lands, but permits it to be used on private lands there seems to be a problem here. I thought the G&F departments are the caretakers of our wildlife weather it be public or private lands, or at least the law enforcement agent that oversee's our game animals.

Just my take on this subject.

All I can say is "there must be alot of wounded deer running around in those areas that allow rimfires for deer,and alot of dumb azz hunters running after them" :?
