GRIP JUNKIE
« on: December 23, 2009, 12:35:56 AM »
I freely admitto being a grip junkie.
I am like a little girl playing dress up, I guess.
I like "old" Ivory, Micarta, and STAG. Nothing seems to dress up a gun like grips do and I like too dress up even the old Norinco.
Esmerelda does some good work with wood---about the only wood I care for.
What about you boys ? I know there are holster junkies and sight junkies, well, all kinds of junkies out there.
I am a grip junkie.

Slowly but surely I'm move'n away from rubber on revolvers I hate to say...though Dee reminded me of the Tyler.  And...I'll only use wood or some other material on a SAs, maybe wood or ivory or stag...we'll see.  I insisit on slimline grips on my 1911s and have had good luck with McCormick's version though the checkering I think is pressed and I MAY make a change.  I have a full house series 70 GVMT that I used to shoot IPSC and it has a pair of Herrett Skip Check (I think they call it raised diamond pattern now).  I have a slew of grips for J frame smiths though...easily 10 or more pairs..some I like but can't shoot comfortably with..including a set of original Craig Spiegels.  I also only put slimline grips on my HPs...rosewood on my blued (actually browned) 9mmm  and a black micarta on my 2 tone tactical in 40sw. Can't seem to get away from the rubber SW500 grips on my 29s though...they are awesome at controlling recoil!!!

I have been getting away from Pachs and Hogue. I like Ruger factory, and Sig is pretty good until they get worn down. Wood is good. I don't like boot grips at all, I just need to get my whole hand on the gun!

I agree that grips provide a function. Apart from function--which can be provided in many materials--I like them too add art/pop/cool to the gun.
I use Mylar, Ivory, Stag and other materials including wood. Can't find the stag pictures--will post them if I find them.
Those T grips on Dee's pistol are a good example.

Good lookin' grips and precisely adjustable sights including a proper slightly undercut front patridge blade, make me feel all warm and fuzzy, William. A gun without them won't stay that way long around here....

William:  reat looking guns.  I had trouble with a set of Ruger fake Ivory, they broke on the inside under heavy recoil, that is why the Hogue.  Alas, I do not have the skill to make my own. 8) I like those black Micarta on Stainless steel. ;D  Really like that engraving on the bottom BBQ gun. :D

I like nice grips that fit my hand. I also like nicely figured wood and make most of my own grips. Stag is ok but I don't own any grips made from it and probably won't ever buy or make any. I don't care for ivory and detest micarta on anything. It's a personal thing and everyone should use what appeals to them.

I don't have anything fancy like the Esmerelda's, just a little something that doesn't cost a lot and dresses up the gun nicely.

The 4" Kimber is my "Court Gun"  The 5" Taurus I bought on a whim. Never a problem, and great CDP gun.

Grips by Hakan Pek on this old warhorse.

Grips on this 3" are the Chip McCormic Thin Grips.

That's it William! The only "Fancy" ? grips I own. Don't think that qualifies me as a Grip Junkie though! :D

edit: I can't make up my mind between the arched and flat MSH, so I have guns with both. I am a fan of thin uncheckered grips on all my pistols though.

Savage----You is in denial ;D ;D :-*

Rawhide
Good eye.
The STI's don't have an arched--one day they will. Well, maybe not the 9x23, I would have to hard chrome it.
The Norinco in its final form has one.
I didn't want to touch the Colt on the engraved roscoe---the newest ones I have are arched--and I do prefer them. I am not going to get contamonated if I touch one am I/ ;)
The two that I can't find the pictures of are arched.

I like "old" Ivory,

I to like Ivory (real) but it is cost prohibative to me, and even the real nice fake stuff costs as much as the revolvers I'd put it on...  :-\

I sure wish I'd brought that chunk of ivory home from the playground of the orient way back when, but it didn't mean anything to me at the time.  Ivory was plentiful then...

Nope, ifn I was gonna spend that much money on grips I'd have to special order a new SAA from USFA and have them do the ivory grips, and engraving...  ::) ;D

But I'm still looking!   :D

My last boss bought a new 1911 and had me order two sets of grips for him.  One set was real Ivory at $300.00 and the other was stag.  I tried to talk him out of the Ivory but no go.  The fifth round through the .45 broke the ivory grips.  He has had the stag on for the last year with no problems.  The manufacturer of the ivory grips would not warranty them, claiming they were tightened to tight.  I stay away from Ivory, the Ruger fake ivory on my Bisley .357mag broke under recoil of 180 grain bullets.  It has wood on it now, no more problems. 8)

The ones that are on the Engraved Colt have been durable.
Whatever the material--the grip is the most important---makeing them pretty is a close second.
I even have some aluma-grips--which I am not fond of--but I am going to paint them-----let's see now--some psychodelic paint colors--wait, that is a flashback, I can't do that anymore  :( 8) :P :'( :-* :D
Anywho--you boys get the idea.

I was just reading a book on the Texas Ranger Joaquin Jackson.  In it he mentions a set of grips given him by a friend in Mexico, they were made of silver and gold, for his 1911 Colt.  Back then the cost was $35.00 to a prisoner that made them.  Said they were very comfortable and he still had them on to this day, Copyright 2005.  Bet they made for a nice BBQ gun. ;D

William,

I love the look of fine grips, but can't bring myself to buy them. I did buy on pair of custom walnut grips for a Bisley and now wish I had made them myself. I do enjoy the pics of the grips of all of you grip junkies.

I probably have at least 15 Hogue monogrips that I use on all of my shooters.

For several years I couldn't let a set of smith 'N' revolver grips get away on eBay, as a result I have hoarded a big inventory of grips. I also have a set of decelerators for all the smiths. My favorite turned out to be the Diamond laminate combat grip. They are really nice looking and very tough. You could clean the gun with these grips on and the solvents don't eat them.

I prefer wood grips so much I take a lot of punishment from my mustang gripped Anaconda. Gloves seem to help.

The 4inch and 6inch smiths have the laminates, hard to get in 'N' square.

The grip on that 45 snub are a unique stippled[?] with the S&W logo in deep relief.

I love the look of a fancy wooden grips.  Unfortunately they cost a bundle of money.   Here are a couple of semi-fancy (not too expensive) grips on a couple of my guns.

I don't know about being a grip junkie but, after 34 years of hanging onto 90# jackhammers and verious weights of sledhammers and my hands seem to change constantly in size and or swelling. I keep several pair of grips for every hand gun I own and change accordingly. Can't wear rings for this reason also, just wear my Masonic ring when it fits.

:D William, I need to order wooden grips for my Mt. gun in .44 and my model 29 S & W. The 29 has rubber after market grips on it...I bought it used, love the gun but hate those grips, the mt. guns grips are too thin for my tastes...Any suggestions where I can order some reasonably priced grips...I have never gotten into this type of stuff .......Yours are very sharp..I like nice wood on my rifles...so ...I guess my pistols are next....

Nice functional wood with good grain and color . I hate flashy , cheap looking , rubber , plastic, metal, and really hate grips with messages on them . Don't care for trashy women with messages all over them either .
