scope mount alignment problems 45LC
« on: December 23, 2009, 03:02:14 AM »
i bought a 45 LC carbine barrel from the classifieds recently....looked for a loooooong time to find it. Got to setting it up the other day and realized that my scope mount hole alignment is off center about half a hole to the right.I've read the posts about fixing this with windage adjustable rings but would rather have it drilled and tapped properly centered. I have drilled and tapped through holes in lots of things but have never tapped a blind hole, and don't have the proper tap(6/48) to do the job and don't know anybody that can do the job here in sunny Californy. I want this barrel bad enough to pay shipping both ways and pay for the work and was hoping i could get one of the handi experts here to either do the job for me or direct me to someone(besides the factory) that can do it.I realize the factory could do it but they aren't very good at simple things like sending the right part you order...even when you give em their own part numbers. Hope to hear from someone. I realize that i can probly fix it with the rings but things that are out of whack really bug me...enough that every time i look at it i'll wish that it was right...so i might as well spend the money to make it right.......Mike. oh yeah,Merry Christmas to you all and your families from me and mine

Someone else reported the same problem recently.  I just double checked mine, and it's right on.

Merry Christmas, all.

when mine came in the mail i put it on the frame i wanted to use,it locked up tight so i checked barrel to breechface with the feeler gauge and everything was good, i just didn't notice the bad alignment till i put the scope base on.....my bad. it's close enough that i can probly get there with the windage adjustable rings but have never used them myself.....

If you do end up going the windage adjustable ring route I would recommend the Millett angle-loc rings.  I've mounted scopes on two Handis, a Tikka, and mod. 700 with them.  They're all steel and they are a pretty decent looking ring.  The windage adjustments are as simple as loosely clamping them to the base then loosening one side while you tighten the other until they are aligned properly.  None of my rifles have had misaligned bases; I just wanted the adjustment so I wouldn't have to touch the scopes adjustments until I got it on paper.  I would be willing to bet that these rings could handle your issue and no one but you would ever notice ;)

If you pay the shipping I will fix it for free.  I am leaving for a month shortly after the new year, but PM ma and I will see if I can take care of you.  It is about 30 minutes of work.  Larry

Looks like I will fix this thing, I will take some pictures of how I do my alignment and drilling of the holes, pictures of the taps needed etc, could save someone some grief later and it will be a good FAQ addition.  Larry
