Arizona’s Coming Government Collapse

A letter from Arizona Governor Jan Brewer
Dear Fellow Arizonan,
We face a state fiscal crisis of unparalleled dimension – one that is going to sweep over every single person in this state as well as every business and every family.
That is why I held an emergency cabinet meeting yesterday morning where I outlined for our state’s elected leaders and business leaders the ills our state faces. As I told them yesterday, we ARE faced with some of the worst days in our 97-year history.
We can debate how we got here, but we CANNOT remain paralyzed in our efforts to address the situation. We must set aside partisan politics and face the problem head on.
We must accept that we ARE where we ARE.
So here’s the TRUTH:
· The state has a budget deficit for the current fiscal year of $1.5 billion.
· Next fiscal year, 2011 — a budget year that begins in just six months — is even worse. Next year’s budget deficit stands at $3.4 billion. As of today — right now, that MUST change.

Even though my Administration has already cut $1 Billion in state government spending, we must redouble our efforts to create a leaner, more fiscally responsible Arizona.
I have asked all 90 members in the State Legislature to cooperate by submitting a reasonable plan. On behalf of citizens across our state, I expect them to become active participants in the budget process.
This problem did not happen overnight.
· Five years of spending nearly doubled state government.
· The economic recession has reduced state revenues by almost 40 percent in just 3 years.
· Population growth in school children, university students, health care and welfare populations and inmates in our state prisons has fundamentally ruled out simplistic solutions like rolling the state budget back to levels from five, six, or more years ago.
· Federal and voter mandates prevent us from touching nearly two-thirds of the state budget.
· And procrastination, denial, and lack of will have allowed these problems to fester.
We must solve these problems and we must solve them now. More than calling for cooperation, today I had state government implement various emergency measures meant to ensure Arizona’s fiscal solvency. Among them:
· I ordered the Arizona Department of Corrections to return to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) — as soon as possible — all non-violent criminal aliens as is allowed under existing law. These inmates are the responsibility of the federal government (as is securing our border with Mexico). Arizona should not have to bear this cost.
· I am restating my Arizonans-only directives to state agencies to ensure that public benefits are provided only to those who are legally in this country and who reside in this state.
· Effective immediately, I have ordered all state agencies who benefits to citizens to implement means testing and sliding fee schedules. While the government safety net must stay in place, we need to secure help only for the neediest among us.
These measures, though they may represent tough news for many Arizonans, are necessary to keep the state moving forward. Every Arizonan must understand why this state is suffering.
That is why I invite you to take a moment now to visit my Web site to view the presentation I presented today to the state’s elected leaders and business leaders. After viewing this presentation, you will see the desperate times our state faces.
You will also understand why we MUST ACT NOW not as Democrats, Republicans or Independents but as Arizonans.
We owe it to the citizens of this state — our children and grandchildren — to adopt and approve a solution.
Sincerely,
Jan Brewer
Governor

Sitting kinda more or less between Mexico and Californication I can understand them having a budget crunch. Hell it's nation wide and it seems no one is doing anything proper about it. I wish them well but with federal and voter mandated portion of that defiict as high as it is it would seem to me refusing to implement federal mandates without full federal funding is their only chance.

If we don't stop the idiots in DC soon there will be no country left to save.

your right there the sad truth they will not do what has to be done to save themselves. california won't nor will the others. they just simply will hide their heads in the sand and let the world collapse around them. this is just the tip of a very large problem and now it looks like so called "HEALTH CARE" will compound the problem even more.

all i know is i am reloading and preparing for what is certain to come. chaos....

Arizona is truly in a bind.  So is Oklahoma.  Tax receipts in OK are running 28 percent behind last year.

Our previous Govenor Napolitano, which with much happiness we were able to give all you good citizens, the new director of homeland security, was a typical democrat. She spent money on all those wonderful social programs while the economy was good. All that funding for free med care, food stamps and housing for illegals just ate the surplus up. hell, they just caught the school district down by Lukeville, which is on the border, picking up illegals to cart to school in Ajo. Doesn't take a lot of that to put a state in the poor house.

Alaska used to have 800 prison inmates doing time in a private Arizona prison. In the last month or so, they have been moved to a Colorado facility. I imagine that has a bit of financial impact on AZ too.

I too wonder how many unfunded Federal mandates are burdening states. What if all / most / many states refuse?

If I understand it right, this new health care bill will impose additional unfunded mandates on states, not to mention further complicating the IRS tax codes.

That's the thing I don't understand. A lot of states are hurting, including mine (Illinois). Our beloved mayor Daley (sarcasm) called Chicago a sanctuary city and wants to keep increasing taxes because all of the illegals are putting too great a strain on our medical, school, welfare and penal systems.

As goes California, so goes the Nation.  Not being in California, at least we get to see what is coming our way.

I'm still hoping that SOLVENT TEXAS will secede from the Union before we get further drained by D.C. and the northern states getting the bailouts.

As far as I can tell, Texas is the only state still solvent......Watch for the coming population increase when it hits the fan elsewhere.

if texas secedes i'm there. but i also think its just alot of talk. its sad to see what's happening to this country. what happened to all the self sufficient, independant thinkers that made this country great? how did we turn into a country of wimps? i could go on and on about the sheep that are more worried about tiger woods and american idol than what their crooked government is doing, but it won't change anything. when are guys like us going to get pizzed off enough to stand up and do something about it?

mechanic, I suspect you are right about the population increase if it ever happened. Folks are allowing their states to fold by supporting the same ole tired candidates and policies, and the lessor of two evils voter, is trading his, and mine freedoms off a few at a time whether they admit it or not.
I quit the NRA several years ago for the same reasons, and joined the Texas State Rifle Ass. and send my money to them instead of the D.C. Compromisers. TSRA has bucked the State Legislature, and reined in the Prosecuting Att.s offices by getting things such as lawful carry in you personal vehicle WITHOUT a license ect. Not to mention the cities annexing agricultural land and then stopping the hunters because now their in the city limits. They can't do that any more. TSRA is allied with NRA nationally but their first interest is Texas.
I think Kay Bailey Hutchins sees the hand writing on the wall and is trying to get home as governor, and I hope she gets her butt beat, and is retired.
I still vote in the national elections, but have pretty much abandoned the two parties, and am putting my money into Texas when I can.

Alaska is currently solvent, depends on what happens with oil and gas in the near future.  We are also looking the opening of some really big mines.  The royalties from Oil, Gas, and Mining should keep us going for a long time.  At least till we become the Republic Of Alaska.  Being Geographically separated we stand the best chance of pulling it off.

I heard today that the Texas Att. Gen. is getting ready to file a suit as soon as the Health Care Bill is signed. The Gov. illuded to the su. word today. Some of us will be putting alot of pressure on some AR lawmakers to follow suit on the solvent issue that is, but failing that I may need to move to OK or TX, I have some TX roots anyway.

Is something in the air?????  Texas is already the fastest growing state with the greatest population increase over the past year.  Wonder what part of that increase is illegal?????
