Spanish 10" Mortar
« on: December 23, 2009, 02:53:56 PM »
This is a Spanish 10" mortar.  Does anyone know what the crescent moon shaped piece is that is located behind the handle and lower on the barrel?  What is its purpose?  It is solid so it is not another handle.  I have almost finished a 1/2 scale version of this mortar and carriage  out of wood and I don't know whether to add this item or not.  It actually has turned out pretty nice.  I want to attempt to faux paint the patina you see in the picture on the barrel and the carriage (the carriage is bronze also).  Anyone have any ideas on this?

Is the vent located close by?  If so, it could be a powder tray used to light the vent powder, in which case you probably should include it, because it is a functional part of the tube.

Any ideas on patina paint?
Zulu

You could have it "Bronzed" and let it grow it's own patena.   ;D

(Just half kidding - there are methods of plating ANYTHING - all it takes is a conductive coating.)

Soot, open a new thread and tell us about that gun!!!

Tim, ah Zulu works in wood...not conductive...I could be wrong...maybe he is working in ironwood...Iron is conductive...so iron, naw.

Ironwood just made the light bulb come on...humm...Zulu, have you considered turning an ironwood barrel?

Even for non-conductive things, there are conductive paints - then comes the plating.  It COULD be plated.

DD,
I have not considered ironwood.  Too expensive and too hard.
I have finished the mortar and carriage.  Is a mortar carriage called a "carriage"?  It has really turned out pretty nice.  I like it.  I was not going to post pics till I had it painted but I'm really up in the air about paint.  I just don't know what to do.  I'll take some pics and ask for suggestions.

Mortar mounts are generally referred to a "beds" or "sleds" depending on their style and construction.

Okay, here it is.  1/2 scale version of 10" spanish Mortar.  Inspired by Cannonmn's restored piece (first picture).  All wooden construction of course.  5" bore, sled 27" long.
Needs to be painted yet but I'm not sure what I want to do.  I still have to put square nuts on.

You can plate non-conductive materials by rubbing a coat of graphite onto the object to provide the conductive layer.  You will end up with a very thin bronze shell on the wood piece but it will be a bronze exterior.  You need to water proof the wood before applying the graphite.

GGaskill,
If you were to plate something wooden, what happens when it expands and contracts?  Wood is subject to a lot of movement.

The usual excellent craftsmanship, Zulu.

If you were to plate something wooden, what happens when it expands and contracts?  Wood is subject to a lot of movement.

I guess the question would be how well sealed from moisture exchange would the plated piece be?

My guess is that the plating would be a pretty effective barrier to moisture content changes, especially if the wood had been well sealed prior to plating.  But it would have to be relatively thick plating and could have no gaps in it.  I think the plating would stretch as the wood expanded and would disconnect when the wood shrunk; probably not a good idea for something to be displayed outside.  But inside under relatively constant temperature, it should work OK.

Having said all that, you should consider the first one to be an experiment.

plate something wooden

You do that by spraying spray glue on, then sprinkling sawdust on it.
