Thanks for the comments everyone. I think this is one of the nicest I've done. My wife wants me to put it on ebay. We will see.

It is designed to sit on the cross slide on a metal lathe; for a wood lathe, the base should be at the bottom instead of the middle since it would mount to the ways.

I have a noisy little question? if you don't mind, with all of your unbelieveable carpenter skills, why do you build out of wood and not the real deal?

This one is the real deal. I built the carriage and wheels and bought the barrel from South Bend. Barrel is 36" long and wheels are 36" tall.
I don't have a metal lathe nor the knowledge to use one currently.
This stuff is my artwork. They are lightweight, easily moveable and I can have them all over the house. I couldn't do that easily with metal barrels.
I disassembled my full scale 10 pounder Parrott Rifle and put it in the house once.

It took 6 guys to get it in and 6 to get it out. Never did that again. I'll see if I can dig up a picture of that.

A 10 Pounder Parrott fills a whole room. You should have seen it when I stuffed a full scale limber in there too.
This was the day I brought it home.

Sold it a year ago.

without the supporting walls the height between floor and cealing would be a bit less then it is in the photo

Holy Zamboni, Zulu! Full sized repro cannon inside the house! A Zanboni Machine came to mind, because if I so much as broached this idea to my wife, just the look she would shoot me would be enough to turn the blood in my veins to ice.
With all the activity on the board concerning awards for different events, maybe someday there’ll be an award for the most understanding cannoneer’s wife, and if that ever happens I know who the first recipient should be. This award will be easy to name, the first two that come to mind are the St. Barbara, or the Molly Pitcher Award.

It was too much work to move it in and out. So it went to a storage shed where I could never see it unless I was re-enacting.
So I sold it after 10 years and actually made good money on it.

Well,
I listened to some of my respected critics and decided to replace the "new" wood with some very old, warped, split, white oak I had laying around. I gave it a light sanding and coated it with linseed oil. Then I killed the shine on the gloss black on the hardware and roughed them up a little.
I have to admit it looks a lot better.

Looks really good!

Still not quite as distressed as I'd prefer (if you think about how many years it would take for bronze to patina like that), but a notable improvement. Something I've used to distress oak is by making ferrous acetate by dissolving steel wool in vinegar. This carriage (red oak) was treated with it (may turn purple) then I applied linseed, which changed the color to what it is currently. Different woods respond differently, though oak being high in tannin, it tends to darken nicely.

In no way am I trying to say that this should be done, just offering my opinion on how I would have finished it. The pieces you chose look great, and what better way to use the unusable scrap wood?

Replacing the pine with that old oak, and dulling the black paint finish on the nuts, chains, and capsquare keys makes your mortar look all that much more realistic; terrific job!

it looks super, it really looks older now
if you want to go further with tha ageing you could stain the steel parts with a little rust and some strokes from the iron parts down the bronze in rust color brown

It didn't last long.

Even my MOST UNDERSTANDING wife has her limits. So they had to leave. Then I slowly filled the space back up with wooden guns.
