Author Topic: Huntsman Ramrod and Ben Hubbard (Read 5013 times)

took my H&R shotgun frame and my Huntsman .50 barrel to KY for their first hunt. Of course I destroyed the ramrod (OEM one) literally second time I loaded the gun. Part of the RamRod apparently stayed in the barrel when I pushed the bullet down the barrel. I didn't notice and I guess that peice is in the ground somewhere, even though the bullet flew true to the paper target. So then I was using a one piece Rod (fiberglass cleaning road really) that I always take to clean barrels. That got me through the hunt and I took a nice fat little doe at 50 yards.

Went on this forum afterward, of course, and read up on all the problems everyone had with the OEM ramrod. Sent an Email to Ben Hubbard in Alabama, and had a response in two hours. He told me to measure my barrel and send him my address and he would send me a RAMROD and pay $35.00 if I liked it!!! It arrived yesterday and it is a masterpiece.. I sent him back a check for $45.00!!

Where do you find a guy like that anymore?

He does mention not to start bullet with it (OEM one would probably work for a while if you use that caveat too), but the RAMROD really is a little jewel of a piece of work.

Ben does great work. He also makes a great ball starter that folds flat.

took several..showing both ends and the telescoping end extended a little.......I'm probably going to hit this with a little Brownell's Alumihide(SP?)..to get it black like the original rod....

I love my Hubbard rod. One of the first things I did was to fully extend it and insert it into my empty barrel and scribe a mark around the rod. That way I can always check to make sure the barrel is empty. I had a friend that lost the end of a finger while working on someone elses muzzy. He acknowledges it was careless on his part. The charge and bullet had been in there since the previous season.

Can you expand on this a little bit.
I am not a fan of the bright brass color of the ramrod and would like it to be black as well.
Just don't know how to accomplish it.

I have never seen anything done with the Aluma Hyde product, but it is a spray on of sorts.

I have see all the brass blackened on a Hawken with Brichwood Casey Brass Black that looked great. I can not testify as to the durability of it though. They also have an Aluminum Black as well.

It is brass and aluminum.

Mr. Hubbard is a very trusting soul. He did hte same to me. I kept asking for his address so I could send him the money and he said it will be on hte item when it comes to me in the mail. I only wish there were more people like him in the world!!!

The handle part is Alum. The rods are brass.

I haven't had any problem using the Hubbard rod for the entire loading process. Just start the bullet with the rod still in collapsed/storing configuration. Instead of "short starting," I run the saboted bullet in until only the aluminum part of Mr. Hubbard's rod sticks out. Then I remove the rod, extend it, and resume seating the projectile. Regarding the bright finish, I haven't had any problems with a can of flat black Krylon. Everything rubs off of a rod with some use, so why shell out the bucks for specialty finishes?

As far as I know, he is still in the business. Good man to work with and one I would highly recommend!!! Enjoy your rod.

Why, are you trying to make a fashion statement??? It works, extremely well! It is more then functional and that is more important then how it looks.

Prep the bright brass and then fume it with ammonia. Nice dark olive finish with no shine. Simple and dirt cheap.
