Best Christmas ever!!!!!
« on: December 25, 2009, 03:50:35 AM »
The Wife gave me a gift last night A trip to Tanzania for a 20 day lion hunt!
Now what rifle the .404 or .375 I had made up my mind as to that it will be the .375. The .404 has taken it's share of African game having been used as a Ranch gun on Grand Dad's Ranch. But I just found out Barns & Swift make bullets for the .404.
I have been thinking of this for a long time and knowing they are shuting down the lion hunting in Africa, Just like the Grizz hunting back home I knew I would have to go soon.
I have read lot's of letters from the outfitter and also some from the PH that will be taking me out. The wife was planing this for almost a year.Funny thing the P.H want's to talk to me about Big Horn hunting as it has been a dream of his too. I used to guide for sheep and worked for a top notch outfitter,we will trade info about hunting in each others back yard lol.Looks like I have to go Sheep hunting again?
I will be going Lion hunting though very soon but the heavy snow might delay things a bit. Gota practice on little cat's first lol!
It's a long time to wait end of Sept, I also want to do a spot and stalk hunt and not use bait but we will see. I can even feel the thorns poking my tender Northern Skin and Smelling the Grass and Buffalo Sh** I have it burned in my brain Lion first other game second.
Maybe I will take the battle scared .404 I am more scared of it getting lost with all the planes I have to take. I have had too much egg nogg with Rum.
Mary Christmas everyone!

This seems a bit odd to come to a general information website and ask a question of people you don't know about what to bring on a safari that will cost you a minimum of 30,000 USD.

20 days in Tanzania at 1250 bucks a day plus trophy fees would seem to justify the Outfitter and PH answering all your questions directly and with great enthusiasm. You're gonna have 25k into this without airfare or even pulling the trigger a single time. The price goes up from there pretty steeply!

"they" are not "shutting down" lion hunting in  Africa. You must know that there are 63 countries on the continent of Africa, it's not one set of laws for all 63 countries. RSA is heading down the road of stopping canned lion hunting. But not for wild lions. No place else is headed that way. There may be limited availability, but it's not dead now nor is the entire continent of Africa on the same page with regards to the end of lion hunting.

This is an extremely elite event which is managed by so few people on earth that it's taken very serious by those few outfitters that offer it. Have you spoken to them about this? Have you actually spoken to anyone in the Safari industry about this? How did your wife go about booking this? with a USA agent? directly? Did you discuss permits and available time slots yet? This is not some simple walk in the park. It's a very big deal.

Are you just kicking tires, or have you actually looked into the reality of this?

I am more or less kicking a few tires lol. I have since spoken to the outfitter, one of my worries was taking a wild cat cal in case my ammo does not make it.
We both agree better to stick with my .375 and a 06 or 7x57 for plains game or even a 300 win as ammo is not hard to find. They really put me at ease about how my trophys will be shipped back home.My wifes brother went a few years ago He lives in Spain so she booked through Directly with the same company. Thing is they don't get any Canadians hunting, I don't trust are anti gun laws up here and  to travel with one might be a problem.I really don't want to end up in Africa without my guns who knows what could happen at the last minute.
I have talked to my Brother inlaw and called a ref in Germany as I speak German both have nothing but good to say. The guy in Germany also was there  just for Lion and anything else was second on the list. He passed up many cat's on his first few day's and said he could care less if he did not get the right one and had no pressure to shoot one from the P.H He also took his on a spot and stalk so it took a little longer.
The spot and Stalk hunt is something I have talked about in emails with them the P.H is keen on it.
Yes It's been a wile since I first posted, I was going off info I had about S.A lion Hunting being shut down. Yes they are a limited game animal I am lucky to be going.I was warned too about time slots and licence for buff and Kudo but I have 0 interest in Buff.
I don't think it's odd I would like to here from others that have been to Tanzania on a Lion hunt.
Air fair is the cheap part!
