240 Grain .44 Mag Load
« on: December 25, 2009, 05:55:21 AM »
Hello,

I'm new to the forum and thinking about getting into reloading.  I'm looking for help finding a handload that approximates Winchester USA's 240 Grain .44 MAG JSP load.  1180 fps and 741 ft-lbs at the muzzle in a 4 inch bbl.  I have lots of once fired Winchester brass and am looking for powder and primer recommendations for a 240 Grain JSP to emulate the muzzle data listed above.  I will be using it in a 7.5 inch Ruger Super Redhawk.

Thank you in advance for your help.

My standard load for the 44 mag has always been a Hornady load.  24.0 gr H-110 and the 240 gr XTP, has worked for me but they list 0.8 gr more as the max load in the seventh edition reloading manual.  DP

2400 is a good powder for the 44mag also. Use std. Primers.  The good thing about 2400 is you can down load with it and have no worries. unlike H110 Or W296 Never Down load with these powders..

For mabny years I have been loading a max. load of Win. 296 ( same as H-110 but I can get it cheaper) and the 240 gr. Sierra bullets for deer. I have many friends and relitives who have use my hand loads and this load seems to shoot well in every gun it has been shot in. I have found that the Sierra bullet give the best combonation of accuracy and terminal preformance for deer. If I were going to hunt hogs the only thing I would change is to go to the Hornady XTP bullets. If your looking for a cheaper deer bullet the Rem. 240`s also preform well.

Ditto on the H110/W296 powder. Used cast bullets of that weight, but shooting silhouette, couldn't afford jacketed stuff. Still as accurate. I used mag primers with either of those 2 powders. gypsyman

I used to use h110 in my blackhawk, but with the sight adjusted down as far as it would go it still shot high. I've been loading alot of .45 acp and .45 super for my encore using powerpistol. So i wanted to use the same powder for the .44 mag. I emailed Alliant and they 12-13gr. using a 240gr. xtp. I loaded 12gr. with a 240gr. xtp and it shoots great!!! The recoil and blast is not near as bad as h110 and the velocity seems to still be good!!! And I can use my sights like they are suppose to be used!!!
