Wobbly Barrel...Help!
« on: December 25, 2009, 07:10:22 AM »
Hello all, I am new here, and a new H & R owner.  I just got a Handi rifle in 243 Win, through Gunbroker.  I am wondering if I got taken.  It has a good bit of side to side wobble; so much so that I initially thought the stock was loose.  Is this safe/normal?  Really a bummer, cuz it's a great little gun!

Thanks in advance for any help!

WELCOME and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
Is that with the action open or with it closed?  If when open its not as big a deal, if when closed, it needs to be addressed.

Our FAQ's have a wealth of information on this and many many other topics!!

I would say, first break it down and see if the 3 numbers engraved on the underlug match the last 3 of the serial number.  That would prove that it was factory fit.....or not.  If they match, I would think it is an H&R problem.  If they don't match, you may have to shim the pivot pin where the barrel hooks onto the frame.  The shim can be as simple as a slice of aluminum (notice I didn"t say "beer") can wrapped on the pivot pin to snug it up.  They don't last too long, so you'll need to drink more of your favorite beverage or check out the FAQ's above.  Good luck with it and Merry Christmas.

Considering it's a used firearm I would definitely follow Pete's advice, it may even be on an SB1 shotgun frame which is another reason why it could be loose. I'd confirm that it is an SB2 frame before doing anything, there's no sense in fitting it if it's unsafe to be used that way. See the pics in the FAQs to determine which frame it's on.

If you find out it's on a newer SB2 frame (FAQ's) and you don't want to shim the barrel, you can always sell the barrel on the classifieds and then send in the frame to the factory, and have a new barrel or barrels fitted.

If it turns out you have an SB1 shotgun frame, then you can part out the gun, barrel, receiver, and stock set, and sell on the classifieds on this the H&R forum, and recoupe maybe all or at least most of what you've invested, or even work out a trade to get the rifle to work for you.

I started out with a single rifle, and through the classifieds, buying, swapping, and selling parts, I've assembled five rifles to which none are original rifles.

Nice thing about coming here is you have plenty of people who are willing to help.

These are great little guns, and what now seems to you like you got taken, may just end up being your new addiction once you see how easy they are to tinker with and get great results.

Happy New Year!

Gentlemen, you have given some great advice, thank you!!!  I will check it out, as well as the FAQ pics.  The rifle is supposed to be NIB, but you never know.

You can verify that by taking Pete's advise and check the last three numbers etched on the barrel lug with the last three of the receiver marked serial number.

If it's not on the barrel lug I would recommend anyway to contact CS and more than likely they will tell you to send it in for repair.

While it's there you could also ask to have another accessory barrel fitted and maybe even a trigger job!

Let us know how it works out!

All numbers match.  I called H&R and they said ship it back to them.  Thanks for the assistance gents!
