DD Request-Converted Smooth Bore
« on: December 25, 2009, 09:49:18 AM »

Click on pic for full size. I found this a week or so ago and what I know is that it's a smooth bore with a rifled liner added, appears to be 3 groove.
This was about the time I decided that I really need to document these things instead of just downloading the pic and throwing it in a folder.
I'm pretty sure this gun is in the U.S. somewhere, so if anybody knows anything sound off.
I read about a program not long ago that searches for pictures, used to search for people using your copyrighted pics that should be able to find out where this came from, and the other 1 gig of undocumented artillery pics I have. I'll look into it later, cause I just started my new bronze secret howitzer project and the only thing about it that's not a secret is that it's 100% silicone bronze and it's a howitzer. Time to put the new lathe to work.

The barrel looks very British. My guess is the location is Australia or New Zealand.

Agree about the British barrel.  The rifling is Woolwich arsenal rifling for projectiles with 3 studs per ring, usually two rings.

Wherever this is, there is no acid rain, which would have chewed up the unpainted iron surface a long time ago.  This thing has a mirror surface.

The traffic sign isn't in any kind of US format either.

The sign on the fenced-in lot says "RESERVED."  In the US it would say "NO PARKING" or "PRIVATE PARKING, EVERYONE ELSE WILL BE TOWED, if towed call Richie's Towing at XXXXXXXX."

Someone who knows trees will figure out that the big white-barked one in the center background only grows in certain places.

English language, right hand drive/left side roadway eucalyptus country. Sounds Australia.

That big white-barked tree is a Lemon Eucalyptus, and it grows very well here in the States, but is native to Australia. Long Beach California School District bought about 1000 of them in the 50' and 60', and they are still growing on a lot of the playgrounds down there.

A friend has just emailed me that they are in Australia for sure.  He also sent a bunch more pix.  There are a pair of them at that location (bet you thought it was a one-off, huh?)  I'll load the other photos and post them.  One of the pix has has a dead giveaway, an unmistakeable lump of Kangaroo dung at the edge of the photo.

Double D, I wasn't suggesting that the cannon was in Long Beach, just pointing out that they (the trees) grow in many other places than Australia, like... Long Beach! And, Merry Christmas to you to! I like the slide shows, especially if you can stop at pics you want to look at more closely....I really like this forum, everyone has a lot of fun poking fun at each other, for the most part....and there is lots to learn, like posting photos...still working on that...!   BoomLover

You can do that all day if you want! I agree. Long Beach is part of Kalifornia, the Land Of The Fruits And The Nuts, and luckily I escaped before they could convert me! ....Plus, they don't got no cannons there!

I'll be specific!

I'm no grinch, I look out for every one the board.

Some people don't have state of the art DSL-or even high speed internet let alone a state of the art warp drive computer sitting right next to the DSL transmitter substation. People still have Square monitors and windows 98.    If they are on a satellite feed or dial up or they are long distance from the DSL transmitter a it's pretty bad when pictures are posted.  They sure aren't going to slow things down even more and click on a link.

The reason for the auto resize of pictures on GBO is to speed up the page load an make the pictures fit these older machines.

As the moderator I have to  look at every link.  When I was in South Africa there was nothing worse than to have review a post full of links.  Not only was I working on slow speed internet, but I was 8,000 miles form the server and my computer would often time out waiting for the page to load the various  links.

I still see this when I go upstairs and work on the wifes older laptop and I try and avoid any internet work on the 6 year old desktop in the other room.  Thumbdrives are great invention

People with the older equipment understand the problem and are willing to accept the slow load for posted pictures, when they do encounter links they just ignore the links.  It's especially bad when there is a whole row of links.  They have to click on each one and wait for each to open, then you forget where you were.

It's kind of like reading book.  It would be pretty frustratring to read a book that kept referring to the items in the illustrations in other books instead of illustrating them right there.  It's kind of like footnotes.  The book you are reading should tell the story, you shouldn't have to look up the referrence in the foot note to get the story.

Bottom line.  No rule says you can't post a link to a slideshow.  It's a good way to share information and and often the only way.  But it's a lot better when you have things to say or share to post them right in the post where the item  can be seen and discussed.  When you have a lot of pictures a slide show is a good way to share them.  But post a few highlights pictures first and tell us what else is in the slide show.  Folks can then decide if they want to take the time to click or not.

Justin Ruhge's book "Historic Cannons of California" (Quantum Press?) lists and pictures about 250 cannons in Calif.  The book isn't like most cannon picture books, it is spiral-bound, has for the most part, muddy black=and-white photos, the captions for which are on other pages, making it a difficult book to use.  However, it is the only book with detailed info on cannons found around CA.  In many cases he has recorded some or all of the marks on the various cannons.  If you want a pretty-picture coffee table book, don't buy this one, but the information in it is unique and useful for researchers.

Even with "high speed" internet, I don't like sitting to wait for each picture to cycle through individually.  I much prefer a bunch of thumbnails that I can click if I want a better view - a service that Photobucket also allows.  I still click on a number of yours because they have some very nice content, but I lose focus when I have to look at one at a time.

That said, these are interesting.  Thanks to you and Soot for posting about them.

Thanks, all I have to do for those is push a different button when I'm setting up the show, easy to do, I'll go back to that for a while if I can remember until tomorrow (yeah, getting long in de toof!)

Some people have a hard time with the thumbnail grid format because they have to DO something to see the real photos, and make big decisions about which ones to look at.  But I won't get too concerned about that group.

Cannonmn,
We all have personal preferenes, so as long as others are voicing theirs, I might as well voice mine; in my opinion, the best 'slide-show' Photobucket formats are those that allow you to stop on an individual picture, and view it for as long as you like, and also have the ability to enlarge the pic in order to view details.

Purely by accident (which is how I seem to find most things ) I found a photostream with the pics and details of these guns.
The avatar that I have been using for some time now is from 1 of these guns and I never knew it!

I think all those I've been posting have those features.  All you have to remember is to mouse over the lower right of the photos to make the three control buttons come up.  As far as I know if you click on a photo it enlarges.  If mine don't do that for you, let me know.

Try it with this one and let me know.

They're ok, unless you want to take a serious look at something - zip by too fast.

Second one is better, but if I didn't have my neighbor's high speed internet it would be frustratingly slow.

No enlargement, but stopping is possible.

Cannonmn,

This is the P-B slideshow format that seems to me like the most user friendly; the forward, and backward arrows that appear at the bottom right of the photo being displayed, allow you to see the next pics, or go back to review pics you've already seen, as quickly as you can depress the arrows, and the center square between the arrows, allows you to stop and view any photo for as long as wanted.
Gulfcoastblackpowder; you can enlarge any photo by a right click on your mouse, this should get you a box with the first two commands being, zoom in, and zoom out.

The Photobucket format you are now using on two current threads, (Dolphins, Locks, and Decorations) seems to me, to have more than a few drawbacks: When I enlarge a pic, (zoom in) the command enlarges all the photos in the slide show, and I lose the pic I intended to enlarge, so I have to find it again. While it may seem like a good idea to show all the pics contained in the slideshow at one time, in reality there are photos that don't have the item centered in the display frame, so all you see is gray, or such a small fraction of the item that you can't even  identify what it is. There's also the fact (at least for me) that when I'm viewing a photo in this format, the other frames to the sides of the pic being viewed, become very narrow, and when I go to click on one, I sometimes miss the photo I intended to enlarge.

This has been a rough post to complete: During the time I was trying to type this, my wife came home from shopping, so I unloaded all the groceries from her car, then gave a look to some new Christmas gifts of mine that she had just got in exchange for some things that didn't fit. Then to top everything off I took the huge box of kitty litter she'd just gotten, and I cleaned and refilled all three trays we keep in different parts of the house. Whew!

Thanks for taking the time to make the input.  If anyone else has an opinion, let us know.  I do lots of these slideshows as you know and it is very easy to push a different button when setting them up and get another type.  I'm guessing that the tuumbnail kind in general would be preferable if it didn't have the drawbacks BoomJ mentioned.  PB has one called "postage stamps" or something that is also thumbnails, but I haven't tried that one.

All comments welcome.  What I'd like to do is, as long as I'm taking the trouble to get all the pix uploaded to the web, I'd like to select what the viewers think is the best presentation format.
