Your opinions please...
« on: December 25, 2009, 01:01:40 PM »
I am returning to the Handi-world after an etended absence. I'm wanting to start with something primarily for deer at relatively short ranges and some fun shooting.  I might add shotgun barrels, but doubtfully will I buy other centerfire barrels.  I have the opportunity to buy one (funds are simply not available, or I would buy them all) of the following:

Stainless Synthetic Handi .270

Synthetic .45-70

SB-1 Synthetic .44 Mag.

So, for my stated purposes, which one would you go with?

Whatever doesn't kill you will make you stronger.  Right up until it kills you.

That's exactly what I was thinkin' too Bob. Especially since he ain't gonna be getting centerfire barrels for it. That SB1 44mag combo fits the bill perfect.

I gotta agree with Jim.  .45-70.  If you're not going to get any more centerfire barrels, the .44 mag. won't do it all.  The .45-70 will.

45-70.  When funds allow, buy a used "beater" shotgun at the pawn shop.  I've bought two for less than $60.00 each.

45-70, but that SS .270 would be cool, and cheaper to reload jacketed.

If you reload go for the 45/70, you can take whatever you want to with that.

Either the 44 or the 45/70 will likely fit your requirements. BUT as been said here so many times, the 45/70 and or the 30-30 are THE handis to own if you only had one...  SO, I also recommend the 45/70 as the one rifle caliber from your selected calibers.

If you where asking or allowing a choice from any handi chambering. The 30-30 and my beloved 357 Maxi would be on my list of top choices. Again, limiting to your animal, distance and fun intentions I would change my vote to the 357 Maximum. Mostly because of the "fun " factor shooting 357 mags and plinking with the chills with 38 spl WC's.

You will not go wrong with any of these choices.

Peace,
 CW

I would say 45/70, and as CW says if the 357 Max is ever an option I would recommend that as well...

not one of your choices but you might want to consider the 30-30.....can't remember anybody complainin about em. In a single shot you can use the standard FP jacketed bullets and if you reload you could use most any 30 cal projectile....then consider PB cast bullets,GC cast bullets......you can do a lot with a Handi 30-30.....

Plus factory 30-30 is 1/2 or 1/3 the cost of factory 45-70
