That's a story kinda similar to one I experienced at a gunshow. I watched someone else handle a tactical shotgun with all the tactical gadgets. Something about it caught my eye when he turned it upside down. It could see a brass case head from a shell in the magazine. That man set the shotgun down on the table practically pointing at the owner/seller sitting behind the table.  I picked it up turned it over and asked the seller if it was loaded. He replied with a hearty, NO!  You should have seen his eyes when I racked 8 rounds out of his gun that day right there in front of a group of potential buyers.  To say he was embarrassed, would be an understatement. I set the shotgun down and reminded him that the safety was also off while it sat loaded in front of him. Seems like some folks just aren't too bright. ::)

Please congratulate that great shooting grandson of yours for all of us!!

Thanks, Dinny

I checked an m-4 like carbine out recently (dpms I think, but with a cheapo stock on it)

anyways, the stock was loose, probably a cheapo aftermarket "kit" stock that didn't fit right, and the bolt was grinding on it when I pulled back on the charging handle.  I don't know if it was a combination of lower reciever fit AND crap stock or just the stock but I pulled the bolt out and check it over, it had some rub marks on it (so the last owner probably had fired it a few times and decided to just pawn it) and the bolt looked like a 223 but the magazines had 7.63x39 stamped on them, with flat followers.  so I don't know what the pawn shop owners were thinking but after inspecting it I told them about the stock, magazines, and had them check the bolt to see if it was even for 223 (supposedly it was but who knows).

they wanted $1,000 for it, now it's 8 something!!!

I bet that as was it'd have chewed up the bolt inside of 200rds, and as is now might not get through 1,000!!!  Never trust a pawn shop guy or even dedicated gun store guy unless they're a "gun nut" or you'll be sorry on anything that ain't factory new.  NEVER!

Had the same almost Dinny lately.  Pawn shop muzzle loader set out in the "used" rack where any and everybody could handle it.  Loaded to the max with a cap on the nipple!  I took it from the hands of a little boy when I saw the cap.
