I know things disappear over time, but I had hundreds of slides (remember 35mm slide camras?) from my days in the military that I haven't seen in a loooooong time. Well, my middle girl had found some and made a frame with some of me in my 20's. I don't think I've changed that much...

Here's one, circa 1969 or '70

well, so much for the "I haven't changed..."

I don't know where we were exactly, but judging by the sand I'd say we were a little west of our home base at Phan Thiet; which is right on the coast of the RVN.

current gear for grenades has them covered up.... I'd have been very nervous to have one "hanging-out" like that
I hope you've gotten more cautious! I've heard age does do that one to most.

how'd you hold onto slick handguards? no body armor, no camelback.... you "roughed" it so that explains the aging, it's not your genes but life as a soldier- you're doing fine to be in hunting and shooting shape, and judging by your pic you still have hair to comb so you're alright.

I'm a 25yr old vet and limp alot with a receding hairline... when I'm 60ish I'll be a mess or ashes

I was thinking about Squibs comments and the changes in the gear--I thought about Charlie Millers comment to the young range officer who viewed his old Colt Commercial with the grip safety tied down as being dangerous, when he said, "Son if this old SOB wasn't dangerous I wouldn't carry it."
No slight on you Squib---that is for sure.
Dang it all Atlaw you was a young and hansome and virile boy---what the hell happened?

I asked, and, then standing in front of the full length mirrow, naked, I gasped and quickly understood.

Memories--they linger and never go away.

Richard - I can see why you grew the beard........................... I was a little further west and north (I believe) at that time at Dak Pek, Dak To and Pleiku.

Yet, your hunting camp pictures are the ones that come to mind, which may be why I don't see so well anymore.

Squib - if you didn't flatten the legs on the cotter pins when you stuffed the handle in your web gear you wouldn't hafta worry about the grenades dropping off your harness and going off......... slick handguards - mil-spec black leather gloves took care of that. My father asked me once about that - why was I wearing gloves in the jungle - ummm Dad, sweat and hot barrels..................

Yes, those were the days when most of us had hair....................

Yea, every once in a while we will open up the boxes of pictures that the wife keeps hidden in the back bed room. Brings back fond memories and good feelings. Then you look in a mirror and wonder where the time went.

Or the kid comes in and sees pictures of his parents doing cool things, and wants to know why we don't do that any more. Then he makes comments like "Mom you were hot in that Bikini" or "Dad what were you doing in a Speedo?"

So......you were a soldier once......AND young? Man with a little hair dye and a few thousands in plastic surgery............never mind. You look better with a few wrinkles in your profession. Age gives the impression of wisdom..I know this from experience.

Never had any problem holding onto my rifle... but then I did find that screaming in terror gives you quite a grip.

and what do you mean no body armor!? What do you call 2 bandoleers of M16 magazines crossed over your chest?

And we smoked camels... why would you want them on your back?

Nope, Air Cavalry, carry plenty of ammo and water, maybe a box of C rations in a sock tied to your web gear if your going to be out more'n a day... I can't imagine humping all the gear the kids do today in the jungle... $:-\$

I spent a lot of time in and around Dac To (SF Camp) and Pleiku in '66. Then I took my Troop up to Pleiku when Nixon ordered us into Cambodia in '70 I think it was. Set up in the old 4^th Division Camp. Those pics are still missing I guess.

Look at the grenade in the picture closely. You'll see duct tape. I had my troops put it over the flattened pins!

I did!

My daughter scanned them from slides and for some reason they were all backwards!

Actually I had to use AF and Navy taylors... I think I traded an SKS for those cammo fatigues... Combat units couldn't get that stuff, the Army REMF's kept it all.

But the it was general issue to the AF and those guys would do anything for souvinirs.

A question for Richard. Did you leave the doors on the Huey? In the 60's i was working at Bell Aircraft. My job was to make the door windows for the Huey. Any scratch on the window and it was rejected. They hired a kid just home from Nam and put him to work with me. He was doing the same thing you did. Every time a window was rejected for a little scratch on it he use to laugh. He said the first thing they did was kick the doors off the Huey. Told me you sure don't want to swoop in to pick up Troopers and have to fool around with doors. We became very good friends and hunted and shot together a lot. I asked him one time what it was really like there. His answer was Bob we are very good friends but if you ever ask that question again we won't be.

. I was drafted on 1/21/65. On the 19th i got a notice my draft was canceled. DO NOT report. Never did figure out why. I have always felt i missed out on something by not going.

Smart butt replys--you handle them with class.
If you can't poke fun at your friends who can you poke fun at.
There is no fun in the doing of what you did.
As for the speedo thing and the nekkidness--I still think about that and I am pleased to know a man who can poke fun at hisownself--shows a lot of class.
I am in my 70th year, young man, and I have passed the verile age and am into the sterile age--and it doan bother me a bit--one less thing to think about.
But, I do agree that you were, and probably are, more hansome than I. I had a hard time with dates, I was so ugly fat wimmen rejected me . Had to find me a young girl from central Texas, who was inexperienced with men and then I swooped her up before anyone knew about her---she has regretted the decision for some times now.
