Lubricating the Model 83
« on: December 27, 2009, 08:49:15 AM »
Since first owning a Model 83 in 454 I've always kept the gun very clean and lubricated the cylinder pin, the ratchet and rear face, and the front of the cylinder where it bears against the frame with a thin coat of Tetra gun grease.  It seems to do a very good job of making the gun easier to clean and cushioning the cylinder from metal on metal contact during recoil.  Does anyone have a different approach and if so what is it?  The question is prompted by a thread I read yesterday about an FA owner unsatisfied with the price FA charged him for repairing the timing on his gun.

You're doing the right things. I use a good oil, rather than grease. Both will work well, depending upon the climate.

In addition to what you outlined above, I put a drop of oil on the hand and one on the cylinder bolt.

Can you post a link to the thread on the timing repair metioned above.

TIA,

Paul

I was referring to http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,189391.0.html wherein Bob Baker said "Hand was extremely short causing the cylinder to not fully index.  This is caused by use, could be firing the gun, could be just cycling the gun.  Either way a little lubrication through the 14 years of use would have helped eliminate this problem."

Keith,

Thanks for the link -- I do remember that thread.
