Merry Christmas to ME! 444XLR
« on: December 27, 2009, 11:03:32 AM »

Looky what Santa put under the tree -- after making me drive 30 miles each way to the gunshop!   ;D

I foresee a future project where this very gun becomes a modern version of the short "P" model.  And maybe a scout scope.  The perfect pick-em-up truck gun.   ::)

I wouldn't touch that barrel. I'd put a Lyman aperture on that baby and let the critters beware. Two and four legged kind. That's a damn nice rifle. Congrats.

I've considered doing the same thing, get one and cut it down to 18".  I have a 444P and the thing is LOUD to everyone but the shooter with hearing protection.  BUT, I have one in the 338 Marlin and it balances so well with the longer barrel I just can't make my mind up on spending the $ to get another 444.  DP

Is the "P" ported?  If so, that's probably where the objectionable noise is coming from -- not because it's a short barrel.  :o

One thing I've noticed with this Santa Special: I ran a mop down the barrel to clean the manufacturing oil out of it, and I got fuzzles around the muzzle (the dreaded muzzle fuzzles?  8)).  I think there's a burr there.  I'm sure it will go away when I fire lap the gun, but easy enough to remove if it's still there afterwards. I just expected better from Marlin with a gun so good looking.

If I had an XLR, I'd cut it to 20".  A low powered varaible scope would be perfect.

Please don't fire lap it.

"Please don't fire lap it."   Swampman, you've gotta come up with a real good reason not to fire lap that new rifle, even if it wears a Ballard cut barrel.  I've never heard of Marlin putting any 'quality' finishing work into one of their barrels after they've assembled one to a rifle, and if you want to shoot any cast from a Marlin barrel, with any degree of success, they should be lapped.

Since this is a stainless version I would go right to Veral Smith, or Marshall Stanton of Beartooth Bullets, for their take on lapping a stainless barrel - it may take some more work than a carbon steel barrel or it may not.

If you have some information as to why a Marlin rifle in 444 should not be lapped then please share it with us.  Thanks.

Because it will shoot MOA right out of the box.  It's just wearing the barrel out.

Looking at that rifle makes me wish I hadn't sold my 1895 Cowboy in 4570. I've got a ton of loaded ammo, and brass, and a mold, and nothing to shoot it in. Hmmmmmmmmm

i had an 1895 rifle and sold it as well when i needed money , and regret it very much !!!

isn't it something how we can do such stupid things like that at certain times of our lives , and kick ourselves later and then turn around and do it all over again.

Yea, I did this a couple of years ago, and I knew in the back of my mind I shouldn't sell it. I haven't done it but the one time in years. The rest of the guns I sold I don't miss.

I sold a Browning 1886 .45-70 and a first year of production 1895(336) in .45-70.  I've never sold a levergun that I don't still miss,

Guess I solved my own delema, bought an 1895 GS 45-70 instead.  Now I don't have to think about cutting a barrel down. ;)  DP

why did you buy a xlr just to cut it down??

'Cause it handles better, fits in the truck better, and I don't need the maybe 150 fps the extra 4 inches would provide.
Sight radius is irrelevant if a scope is used.
Can't go more than 100 yards in my woods without hitting a substantial oak or maple, so why would I want a long barrel?
