44 Mag Snubbie Tender

Got bored over the Holidays.  I had a barrel that someone had given me after they had tried their hand at "porting" it.  That plus some extra sights ans I built this.  Eventually I will replace the rear grip with wood but it is in the testing stage now.

I bet the recoil would be a bit stiff. But it could be fun too. The blast would be horrible. Cover your ears please!!!! ;D Tell us how it shoots!!

I like it!! What's the overall length of the barrel?  Recoil shouldn't be bad at all.

Barrel length is 6 1/4" I cut it that length so the engraving on the side of the barrel would not be compromised.  Muzzle blast shouldn't be too much of a problem as it would be similar to shooting a 4" revolver.  I was thinking of shooting Trailboss loads through it since I view it as a plinking gun.  I thought it would make a balanced, light carry gun for back up while hunting or just "futzing" around.  If I wanted more power then I would shoot my 50AK or one of my 500 Smiths.  Of course even TB loads will kill a hog...

Has anyone tried something like this with a .44 mag in the Encore?  Might be fun. . .

I shoot the .44 mag in the 12 in barrel and it is very accurate and very managable.

I like it. I was considering trimming a s14 [44] to just clear a beavertail forend. A mini-mannleicher. Shoot it at night with black powder.

Did you ever shoot it?

Can't imagine it is any worse for recoil than some of the short 44 revolvers.  Particularly the lighweight alloy ones.

Let us know how it was please.

The Thompson/Center Association  had T/C build a few (43 as I recall) 6 " blue .44 Mag. Contender barrels a few years ago. Fired with full charge loads and wood grips, the recoil was/ is ...invigorating! Cracked my wooden grip after about 100 rounds.
I shoot mine with lighter loads now. They are fun guns. I have a 1" Ultra Dot on mine, as well as on my TCA  6 " .22 LR barrel.

The only thing I have close to that short are my custom Reeder Pirate barrels. Both 8 inches over all length no porting at all in 510 GNR and 475 Linebaugh.

I haven't shot it yet.  I am not worried about the recoil because I'm not particularly bothered by it.  I will let you know how it groups though.  I can't imagine it shooting more that 1 1/2" @ 25yds. but will keep you posted.  I think that for maximum illumination at night a full load of 680 should produce a massive fireball.

I shot the stubbie today.  I have to get a higher front sight blade as it shoots too high with the rear sight moved all of the way to the bottom.  Accuracy was about 2" @ 25yds with my 265gr plinkers.  I don't like light bullets so I may try a 260 NEI and drive it a little faster.  It is definitely a blast to plink with though and balance seems almost perfect to me.  Slightly butt heavy but thqt should change when I replace the rear grip.
