Has anyone ever tried mounting a peep sight on a handgun? I think I have seen them on target guns but never really looked closely. Was just wondering about some of these goast sights that mount low.

I put an Omega peep blade on a 10 1/2" SBH in 1978 or 1979 and shot a few wildcat silhouette matches with it. I was surprised at how well it worked, but I felt it was delicate, sticking up as far as it did, and removed it. I never hunted with it.
In the early days of metallic silhouette shooting, many receiver peep sights were put on Unlimited guns - XP's, Super 14's etc, but they faded away rather quickly due to the match winning superiority of square notch rear sights.

IMHO, peep or receiver sights work best close to the eye. Very accurate when properly set up.

I've got the One Ragged Hole sight on my Blackhawk. I do like it.

I tried to use the ONE RAGGED HOLE sights, but it just didn't work for me. At arm's length and both eyes open I saw two of everything, and I could never figure out which sight to look down. They work great for some folks, but I still like the bead/V the best.

Intersting concept. I can see the utility.

I'm a little surprised however, that he had the time to develop that sight considering the time it probably takes to comb his hair.

That hex thingy is kinda interesting. I made this poor-man's peep out of an old red devil paint scraper blade:

The front sight is blurred in the pic 'cuz the camera focuses on the peep, not thru it. Shoots nicely for my 60-YO eyes, though--

I bought a set from ORH and put on on each of a couple of Blackhawks. And, took them off again. Maybe if I had started with them many years ago I could have gotten used to them. I think that they may be ok for LE where precision isn't as necessary as speed. These days I want minute of rabbit head accuracy and I don't think these big holes are quite as precise as my posts and blades.

Also, I am beginning to have fun with long range shooting, like old Elmer Kieth. To do it his way you raise the front post so it is no longer level with the top of the blade. I used to just hold over my target, but I'm finding Elmer's way a lot better. You can't do that with a peeper.

Tommyt: You're on the right track--the paint scraper blade is about the same thickness as the original SBH rear sight. I removed the notch Ruger sight, laid it on the scraper blade and etched the outline, just as if I was duplicating the original. Then used a felt tip pen and outlined a circle so the center "hole" was approximately where the notch was. I drilled the hole, and then it was all Dremmel tool and files to get it to shape. A little cold blue and it's done. Simple, huh?!

Never even thought about annealing; not to hijack woods' post, but I dug out the parts used (I never throw anything away) and took a quick pic. And realized that I used one of the original holes to craft around.

That's the original SBH rear sight laying on the uncut blade.
