7mm rem. mag. vs 7mm-08
« on: December 28, 2009, 01:45:35 AM »
Ok Guy's here's the thing, I'm looking to get another barrel for my pro hunter. For most big game I now shoot 7mm Rem mag and have allot of brass and bullets for this cal. but have been hearing allot about 7mm-08 and don't know anything about this cal. Would like a few opinions on witch would be the best way to go. and can I make the transition to 7mm-08 with the bullets I have now?

I shoot a 7-08 and love it. Yeah, the 7mm bullets should transition right into the 08. I like to keep my 7-08 shooting 140 grain bullets or lighter. And my 280imp. gets fed the 160's. But no doubt the 08 ought to be OK with the 160's, I just wouldn't think it'd be the ideal weight for it. But that's my thinking, others may have actual data that says different.

Your 7Mag gets about 250 fps more than the 7mm08. The 7mm08 will not do any better than what your 7Mag can do and a barrel swap will not get you much of a weight savings. Are you having a problem with the 7Mag? If you reload and can lighten the powder charge and make it a 7mm08.

:D  I plan to use the 7mm bullets I have left over after selling my 7mm RM in a 7mm-08. But as some one said, I will use lighter bullets in the 08 and finish shooting the heavier ones in the Wea..7mm.  ;)

I'm not having a problem at all with the 7mm mag I shoot it out of a Weatherby and love the round, have killed lot's with it.The problem is I bought a pro hunter in .223 and fell in love with the gun. Now I want to put up the Weatherby, 1-I fell for a single shot. 2-The Weatherby is signed by Ted Nugent don't want to use it anymore! so- I need a new barrel for the pro hunter,I have lots of brass and bullets for 7mm mag but was wondering if the 7mm-08 might be a better choice for were I hunt, suburban country side. were I have to be really careful of my shots i.e.. houses in the line of fire

7mm08 is a great round for eastern or suburban hunting. In a lighter mountain or Rem Model 7 you can carry it all day. I have one in an encore that is great but there is no weight savings.

I'd stick with the 7mm Remington Magnum since you have the brass and bullets already and it has significantly better performance than the 7mm/08.  As for the 7mm/08 being better for the suburbs; I doubt it.  You will have to be very careful with either one.

I'll agree with all that's been said. It's really all about application and personal preference in the end. Either way, you'll have to know your target and what's beyond it. The velocity difference isn't enough to make one caliber safer than another.

"Better Performance" imho is a subjective term. I've hunted for about the last ten years with a 708, my hunting partner hunts with a 7mag. We hunt Whitetail and hogs. I'd bet no animal shot by either of us could have told you there was a difference between the two rounds. Very few tracking jobs for either rifle. Sure, the mag is a little flatter shooting, and it will hunk a heavier bullet a little farther and flatter (it's intended purpose). But any shot 300yds and under, there never was enough difference to make me want the larger version.

I did pick up a 280 imp this year, in an Encore. It is dedicated to be my heavy(er) bullet rifle. Shooting 160 bullets primarily. And it seems to be performing just fine thus far. But again, I bet no animal I've shot with it so far could tell you there's a difference between it and my 708. Not even the Elk I flat missed this year, LOL.

One caliber, the mag, will be a good bit louder, have much more recoil, and burn a lot more powder.

The other, the 708, will benefit from less powder, lower recoil,, and a reduced amount of noise (although still a high power rifle).

Then there's always the 280 rem. It falls out in between the two rounds being discussed here. Just food for thought.

Like stated above, you already have the brass and some components. That might play in to your decision making. It might weigh heavily on mine. But if the 708 is something you feel you need or want, I don't think you'd be disappointed. It is quickly being adopted by an ever-growing number of hunters here in the south. And I don't think I've ever heard of anyone who got one and found a real deficiency with it when they used it within it's limits.

I have shoot the 7mag as well as the 7mm-08, they are great rounds.  If deer is your main target I would go with the 08.  I have been using in my pro hunter the last few years and is the real deal very light recoil, all the power you need and mine is a tack driver.  I have taken alot of deer with it .
God bless

The 7mm-08 Remington will serve you well and will also handle any bullet you use in your 7mm Remington Magnum.

If you want a little more then choose the 280 Remington, either way I would stay away from the belted magnum in the Encore.  Some people needed to bend (adjust) the extractor in order to clear the belt.

I don't see any of the mentioned cartridges as a suburban round unless you use blunt heavy for cal cast bullets. They in itself are not without danger since those bullets will ricocet(??) much easier then fragile jacketed stuff.
Perhaps for safety sake alone, forget 7mm and look into a pistol cartridge.

I Couldn't  decide either between the 7mag , 280, and 7-08. The only out I saw was to have all three ;D ;D. My 7mag is a rem cdl SF that I shoot the 160 AB out of the 280 and 7-08 are prohunter barrels. I shoot the 140 fusions out of 280 and is my in-be-tween round that I use in the woods and also don't have a problem out to 350 or so. The 7mag I primarily shoot out of shooting houses in open fields, The 7-08 is set up to shoot in wooded stands, shooting the 150 hot cores in it. Altho the 7-08 is a very capable longer range cal. I choose to use it for 200 and under (at least for now).

Don't forget that the ProHunter barrel is 28" long which will give you more velocity.  I would imagine that the 7mm-08 with a 28" barrel will approach the muzzle velocity of the 7mag in a shorter barrel.  I have a Winchester 88 that I had rebarreled from a 243 to 7-08 and it is one of my favorite rifles.

go with the 7 mag it will do the same thing all the others will do and more and you have the brass already the recoil is not bad in the encore either     and any of them will be dangerous if its pointed at a house so thats not a reason in the choosing of the round

I'm doing the same thing but 30 cal. 300 WM for bigger game and 308 or 243 for deer. 708 is just a necked down 308 and with some faster burning poder like 4895 get good velocities in a shorter barrel. 308,243, 708. makes a lighter easy carry fiream in the 22-24 inch barrels. I have one 308 barrel that is 16 1/4" for pistol or short carbine rifle.

i prefer the 708.  my 7mag kicked harder and seemed louder.  708 is nice to shoot, and accurate and deadly. love the round. just my opinion
