41 caliber Wildcat? Need an Opinion.
« on: December 28, 2009, 08:23:13 AM »
I am interested in having a wildcat built for my Contender. What I am thinking is having something like the 40-44 Woodswalker by SSK or 41 GNR by Gary Reeder built. Both are basically a 44 mag necked down to 41 caliber. This will be used for an all around cartridge in my contender. The specs for both show a 170 grain bullet doing 2100+ fps. What do you guys think?

I have the 41 GNR in a S&W Mod 657 , I flat love this round , the 170's do move down range thats for sure , out of a 8" barrel I get an honest 2050 FPS across my Chrono with a max load of H110 .

I also shoot the Lee 190's , 210's and some GC'ed 255's in mine , all are very good bullets for this round , it can be loaded down to 41 mag levels or up to OUCH levels depending on your needs .

I'm thinking of doing one in a 14" barrel. I have a question, What do your case's measure in length? And do you have the reloading data book for the GNR cartridges?

Brass measures 1.275" and does not grow much at all , even after 4 loadings .002 is the most what I have found .

As far as Data goes , I have the basic loads that he sent with the dies , all the rest has been worked up over the last few years , and from other 41 owners . I may have to pick up his book one of these days though .

I also had him do me an H&R Handi-rifle in 224 GNR for P-dogs & groundhogs , another sweet round .

The reasonI asked about the length is that Kansas Regulation state that a case must measure 1.280" unless there is a published standard( i.e. blueprint) that says that the cartridge length is 1.280" or greater. Was there a max case length listed with your data that came with the dies.

Then the 41 GNR woln't do .

Seeing that your looking at the TC as a platform instead of a wheelgun were your stuck to Cylinder leingh , the 41 GNR #2 or the 410 GNR would be better choices .

And of those 2 , my choice would be the 410 GNR , just due to the fact that 454 Casull brass is easier to come by than 445 Super Mag brass , also the 454 brass was designed to run a higher pressure that the other two , letting you bump up the power if need be .

I have a surplus of .44 cases and since I don't have a wheel gun I was going use some of it to make eithr of these rounds. didn't want to have to buy more cases. But the 410GNR does look like fun. But I really don't want anymore recoil than what I am getting for my 10" .44 mag barrel. I know that adding 4"s of barrel will help, but im not sure how much.

Changed my mind. going to get an MGM .357 Maximum. Have a bunch of .357 mags that I can use for practice. Thanks for the input.
