Norma45/70 Brass

Anyone use it? I have a friend with a custom p14 and he uses it trimmed to 2.80'' in that cannon, that would be very much the same length as a .458 lott, a wee bit less case capacity but all he really wanted was a 500gr bullet at 2150. I looked at it and it is long as it is a case ment for reloading not just stuffing in a 45/70 you have to trim it to length. I put this in the H&R section as I think  most 45/70 shooters here are on this section. I know it is shorter than the 45/100/120 but To me Norma makes the best cases and you can get it at most good gun shops I do not shop on the net and getting stuff in Canada is not as easy as the U.S except we have had BRNO for 20 years longer than you guy's.
But anyone ever think of using it's full length form? 2.8 is better than 2.105.
I would just call it the .458 Norma Mag

Norma makes two forms of that brass, some is headstamped 45-120 which is what many use here in their 45-120 BCs, and the other stuff is shorter which they refer to as 45 Basic. I wouldn't mess with the 2.8" stuff, just do a 45-120.

I did not know they made the 45/120 size! After shooting 30 rnds through my friends P14 I fell in love with it it feels like my .404 except the Cock on Closing. I am going to Africa next year I would never take a single shot but do like the idea of a big .458.
A 2.8 case out of a strong bolt action is the way I would go, though I like my single shot 45/70 trap doors for the hours pleasure they give wile shooting them,but the yotes don't care for it.

Did in the African forum hard to fugure where to post?
 I do like my single shots though lol!Going to buy a handy in 45/70 next week as the owner say's it kicks too much my first own handy.I have owned and used the big Marlin so I don't think it will be too bad I will stick to Marlin loads for it as I have felt the gun and it is light.But I am a sucker punishment

Add a good recoil pad and it will make a world of difference even with the 1895 loads, I shoot Ruger loads in two of my H&Rs, one has a Pachmayr Decelarator and the other a Limbsaver, you can also add weight or a mercury recoil reducer to the stock if it's still uncomfortable. Be sure to spend some time in the FAQs and Help sticky to help improve your experience with the H&R.

I just bought the gun give me 3 hours and I will tell ya how it shoot's it has been fitted with a Pachmayr pad. I have 1.5 boxes of 405 Rem factory and some of my 350gr Marlin loads they are max Marlin loads with R7 and a Hornady, I will also compare it to my trapdoor in the recoil dept. It has Moose rifle written all over it!

Yep I have read them.
 50gr of RL 7 was not too bad I thought it would be worse the muzzle  flip up was low just a big push. The 405 Rem Factory rounds have little recoil, will Chrono them when the weather gets better but to me they felt like my trap door rounds cast bullets in the old Springfield. I like the factory sights had no trouble breaking clay targets out to 50 yrds with them. Would have liked to try some longer ranges but did not feel like walking through the snow.
Best part was the trigger I would say about 5 lbs but crisp.
Also no pressure signs with the 50 grs of RL 7 and the 350 gr Hornady.

I just didn't want you to go out and be disgusted with pop opens, it happens all the time when folks first get a Handi and don't clean it good.  That's a nice levergun load, I shoot the 350gr Hornady in my scoped BC at a little over 2000fps, makes one hole 3-shot groups at 100yds, recoil is very tolerable with a 16oz MRR in the stock bolt hole and a Galco slip-on pad!

I fired it a few more times took a shot at a yote this morn and missed but I swear he duct lol. Now Scope and open sights is a whole new ball game. I wish I could set a scope a bit lower on the gun but that wont happen I am really happy with it will cut the chamber to 2.8'' though just a bit more flexable that way. To be honest I was scared of all the bad things I herd about the 45/70 in a handi as it was too much gun for the boney handi. I know it's a1.5 lb lighter than a Marlin but it feels the same to me in the recoil dept?I love my Trap doors but this is a fun gun! I have been working on a hot 405gr load I have a lot's of 400gr Speers too lol. I do have to go longer in the throat as my trap door loads with even the light 380gr hit the Rifling on the handi. The trigger on mine is perfect not to heavy no creep and you do not have to slap it just make sure you pull it I know that makes no sence except to the handi shooters. I have to put a pointed barnes through it.

There are a lot of ignorant people out there concerning H&Rs, specially some gunsmiths that should have a little more knowledge about firearms in general to be working in that profession, they don't have a clue, so they dis em. 

A little hammer spur or extension trimming will allow you to mount the scope in low rings, I've done it many, many times on my H&Rs, I don't like high mounted scopes, with an old style hammer you can use extra low rings, mounted so low that the turret saddle on the scope barely clears the base!!

True they are not the nicest guns made. I had some trigger time behind a 30/30 handy shooting at yotes ya it was loaded with with 125/130gr bullets I now have a off set hammer spur for mine so I am on my way, Dam I wished they made 300lb yotes but my cattle would not like that idea.
Put another 40 rounds through it today all with the Hornady 350gr bullet and warm RL 7 hand loads 50 to 53gr of powder, got's to try me some 748 in that thing . The gun loves my old lee mold though, with the lightwight cast bullet at a measured 2080fps not bad out of a 22'' barrel for a as cast 380gr bullet. I am having so much fun with my 200.00 dollar gun

Tim, that low scope in the pic you posted is, IMO, what a rifle/scope is supposed to look like. I don't often scope rifles, but if I did, that's what I'd want it to be.  A scope mounted high gives the impression it doesn't belong.
