Wild Cat Calibers?
« on: December 28, 2009, 12:16:51 PM »
Wild Cat calibers and game law's. I have looked and most game law's you need a 375H&H for DG but what about Wild Cat non standard chamberings? I know the 416 Hofman and Taylor and the .458 lott/watt's have been around a long time (I might have spelled them wrong)But really how do they measure it? The Watt's and Lott and Taylor were wildcats at one time too. I know the new Short mags have brought change here as we no longer have a min of 41 mm case length. I know that a norma Norma 45/70 basic case  is 2.80'' really it's 2.874 the same length as a 458 lott with a tiny bit less case capacity and can get a honest 2250+fps out of a p14 would be a fine gun but it is not standard. There is no published data for guns like this, so how does it work?
P.S I would never use anything less than a .375H&H it's my favorite gun but Wildcating is as strong as it was in the late 40s and early 50s and we have so many cases to build on now.

In practical terms, two things will probably be considered:

1.  The cartridge will have to be at least .375 caliber.

2.  The PH will look at the cartridge and say it's big enough.

With some research you probably can find data on many wildcats unless it's a one off you've cooked up yourself.  Failing that, there will probably be a wildcat or commercial cartridge close to it with published data.  Also consider that there are proprietary and obscure commercial cartridges for which published date is just as hard to find as data for wildcat cartridges.

A more practical thing to consider is the ability to get properly headstamped ammunition.  If you ammunition headstamps didn't match what was on the gun, a government bureaucrat might not let your ammunition into the country.

Thanks! I think I will stick to the .375H&H and a 30/06 or 7x57 for plains game as I worry my ammo might not make the trip with me, if that happened I would be SOL.

Instead of one of the wildcats what about one of the old soldiers.
For DG
Rimless
404 Jeffries.
416 Rigby
Rimed
450/400
405 Win (Hornady makes loads for single shots and other actions that is up there with 450/ 400. May be hard to get)

And then for the plains game
6.5 X54 Manlicher
303 brit.
7X57 mauser
6.5X55 Swede.
30-40 Krag.  ( although may be hard to get there)
9.3X62
9.3X74R

I am a ''old soldeir kind a guy'' Got most of them like the idea of the .303 being a Canuck that was my first big gun. I do have Grand dad's .404 I am scared to lose it with the way airlines are! 30/40 is hard get  here too and a .303 is a tad better.
I must say I was very happy to see Barnes makes a .404 X bullet, Ah gotta get that thought out of my mind I have become one with my 602 .375 at least ammo is cheap enough to shoot 50 gophers a day with the .375( yes every round is a reload)
But dam you just had to bring up the .404 ;D or as stamped on my gun 10.75x73 lol them dam Germans lol
What would my fore Fathers think A Canadian shooting a English Cal in a Chexz gun married to a Russian. ( she is a Canuck now)But the 7x57 and 8x57 are always close on hand to keep them happy lol.
