Browning A-Bolt .270?
« on: December 28, 2009, 06:06:45 PM »
Hey guys, The oher day I took my bolt apart in my .270 A-bolt, so I could clean all they old jumk in there out and now I can't get itback in.  I've taken some pre-64 and model 700 bolts apart and I thought they were easier unless I'm just not doing some little something right.  So I took the bolt apart and I believe the firing pin snapped when  I was trying to get it out.  But anyway I like about 2 o 3 turns before it is al the way back on.  Is there something i'm not doing right?  Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Andrew.

Is this an A-Bolt or A-Bolt II? There's a little difference in the bolts but not too much.. Did you remove the firing pin retaining pin? The Abolt uses a composite bolt and the pin that halds the lugs on to the bolt body must be aligned before it will go back together. What exactly won't screw back together? Take a look at the diagrams and let us know where you are in the re-assembly.
Thanks..

Sorry it is the older Abolt made in 1990. I unscrewed the back of the bolt so I could clean the firing pin spring, but i left it attached to the back of the bolt housing.  Now I can't get the back of the housing screwed back into the bolt sleeve. The sleave keeps twisting all the way around in my hand when I'm trying to screw the back of the housing in.  Going by your diapham I can't get part # p078536 screwed back into part # p078046. and thanks for the diaphram link was very helpful .

Notice that the pin retaining the bolt sleeve (78046) is locked to the bolt head (78548) by the pin (78558) which has a hole in it. The firing pin (78615) passes thru the hole in the pin(78558) which precludes the sleeve(78046) from turning. If the pin catches on the edge of the hole in the pin or can't get thru it the bolt won't go back together. be sure the pin that locks the bolt housing to the bolt head is lined up so that the firing pin can enter and retain the bolt head retension pin(78558).
