WI Wolf Shooter gets $2,500 fine & 20 days Com. Service.
« on: December 29, 2009, 01:50:39 AM »
Did you guys see this. The WI guy got a $2,500 fine & 20 days community service for shooting the wolf, & no hunting license. He also can't buy a license for 2 years. This seems rather steep. He should of taken his chances at a full blown jury trial. wluc-tv 6 in MQT has the story.

This wolf was bagged in MI.

The story was a fine of $25,000, later corrected to $2,500.

Guys can't shut-up!   They go go bars, convenience stores, etc and tell all their buddies about whacking a wolf---yes, location and all the details.  Game Wardens make about 80% of their arrests on tips and then cross questioning!

The fine appears to be $2500, but still, that's a lot dough to pay out for a Wolf Tag. It must include the out of state charges. ;)

Community service and fines of $2,500

IRON COUNTY -- A Green Bay, Wisconsin man who killed a wolf in Upper Michigan and was caught hunting without a license was sentenced Monday in Iron County Circuit Court.

Stephen Popp, Jr. was sentenced to 20 days community service and ordered to pay more than $2,500 in fines.  He is also on six months probation and is banned from hunting for two years.

Popp was hunting in Iron County on November 16 without a license when he shot and killed a wolf.

Iron County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Schwelder said not paying for a hunting license puts Popp at greater fault.

"You didn't bother to pay the fine or the fees that all of the other hunters pay to maintain the deer herd and the natural resources of this state.  You just came over here and decided you were going to hunt without a license at all," scolded Schwelder.

The Judge gave Popp the choice of 20 days community service or 10 days in jail.

Popp chose commuity service which he'll perform in Green Bay.

I had a State Trooper tell me once that If people would shut up they would get far fewer arrests and fewer still convictions!

Well, the 1st news story did have $25,000. That did appear WAY out of line with past fines, goofy reporters for you. I still think it's about $2,500 to much.

Exactly Sourdough. I don't doubt it one bit that they originally reported it at $25,000. I was just looking for the report after reading your post and noticed that WLUC TV6 had the fine down to $2500. And I agree that "it's about $2,500 too much."

Apparently he didn't worry about gettin' a license this year. One reason he got such a stiff fine. Huntin' deer out of state without a license.........What a dirtball. Odds are not being able to purchase a license for two years ain't gonna stop him from huntin'. Losers like that just consider it more of a challenge.

Your absoutely right Buck!  Here in Kansas we have an antiquated system of getting an online license.  We are allowed one (any deer) permit which basically means you can only shoot one buck.  When you go to print it will only let you print one license at a time but when you go to print your printer asks how many copies you want.  Some get 4, 5 or whatever.   They shoot a buck, tag it and wait till the time is right.  Then they go out with a new tag and start all over.  You are right---no license will not slow these low lifes down!

Why don't some of you Wisconsin residents get together and help this guy pay his fine. That will help get the message that you don't want the wolves protected.

Did he plead guilty or did they actually find a jury to convict?
