December 29, 2009 at 7:05 a.m.Community service and fines of $2,500IRON COUNTY -- A Green Bay, Wisconsin man who killed a wolf in Upper Michigan and was caught hunting without a license was sentenced Monday in Iron County Circuit Court.
Stephen Popp, Jr. was sentenced to 20 days community service and ordered to pay more than $2,500 in fines. He is also on six months probation and is banned from hunting for two years.
Popp was hunting in Iron County on November 16 without a license when he shot and killed a wolf.
Iron County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Schwelder said not paying for a hunting license puts Popp at greater fault.
"You didn't bother to pay the fine or the fees that all of the other hunters pay to maintain the deer herd and the natural resources of this state. You just came over here and decided you were going to hunt without a license at all," scolded Schwelder.
The Judge gave Popp the choice of 20 days community service or 10 days in jail.
Popp chose community service which he'll perform in Green Bay.
