Proper scope for semi-Scout mount
« on: December 30, 2009, 11:29:58 AM »
In the past pictures have been posted of folks who have mounted a scope far enough forward to clear the hammer.  Sort of a semi-Scout mounting.  I was wondering, what scopes work best for this concerning eye relief.  Seems like a pistol scope, and even a dedicated scout scope might have too much eye relief.  Meaning that a scope mounted this way may still be too close to the eye.  Would shotgun scopes work?

Thanks for the help and Happy New Year.

you are correct in that a pistol scope would have too much eye relief.  You need a dedicated shotgun or big game scope.  These typically have 4" of eye releif which allows the scope to be mounted right in front of the hammer.

I've got a Burris Timberline Ballistic Plex mounted this way on a .308 Survivor. This scope had a listed eye relief of 3.7 - 5 inches. Seems to work OK through the power range.

How its mounted as well as were its mounded will also matter , some handgun scopes have a shorter eye releif to were it will only need about 8" and some of the Bushnell standard rifle scopes have up to 6" of ER .

The size of the scope's bell also comes in to play , or you could go with a Red Dot and it may not matter too much .

Clear as MUD right ?

The Leupold 2 1/2x regular scope has about 5" of eye relief. I have a friend that loves the one he has on his 45-70 Handi because of that....... and it's a good scope.

I have had a couple of the Simmons 2.5X Shotgun scopes on handis in the past and the mount just like Canons pic.

It works just like a scope setup, allowing shooting with both eyes open. But if you get more power it doesn't work as the difference between what your eyes see will cause them to just see thru the more powerful one. If that makes sense...

Guys, thanks for the replys. I am mullin again.  Mullin over getting another 4570, shortening the barrel, and mounting a scope as we are discussing.

Here is a pic I just ran across from my 12Ga USH when I thought a aimpoint would be a good plan...

It worked well, but the batteries died too quickly.

Nothing fancy here, I found a weaver base that matched the hole spacing of the rear site. Cut screws to fit and mounted it up...
