Lure's
« on: December 30, 2009, 12:37:58 PM »
I know there has been a lot of talk about good lures. I thought I would mention what I think are some great lures I came across a few years ago. Stef Forget scents such as Cachottier and pikauba to name a few are top of the line. I do make my own and have tried many other brands but his stuff is hard to beat. Give it try if you're looking for something different.

Northwoods I am going out tomorrow to put in some cat sets.......  I have some of Stefs lures (Pikauba, Cachottier, XLDC) I have heard good stuff about Stefs products so that is what I am going to use....  Hopefully I will have some bobs come the new year...

mtbadger, I think you'll be happy with the results. Another good thing about Stefs products is they are freeze proof which is a good thing here in Alaska.
Good luck and have a Happy New Year.

Most lure makers I know--freezeproof their lures.Steff is not the only one that does it.

I can tell you most lure that is supposed to be freeze proof will freeze solid here in Alaska in my experience. We don't have any coon up here but Pikauba for lynx and Cachottier as a call for just about everything else work pretty darn good. I do agree you cant go wrong Lennons lure's I use it. For one reason or another an animal might not work a set but that doesen't necessarily mean it's the lure.

Just brought in some of lenons weasel lure and some of my beaver lures.-27 degrees and they were not frozen.
Being from Minnesota I know about cold temps, so when I make my beaver lures(which are also used for cats and canines by a lot of my customers)I make sure they can stand up to cold. Now I can't say about 40 below--as we haven't been that cold for a while--but it seems like I have -30 covered.

Stefs ProCoon, just was used on a program for rabies the past two summers, in cage traps, In Quebec. 25,000 coon later- i'd say it works.

agreed northwoods- pikubua and cachottier, are two of the better lures out there. I've used Toms beaver lures, and they work pretty darn good as well.

There are 2 cat programs ongoing in CO, and both use pikubua as their #1 lure, and have for past 4 years.

Tom, sounds like you have a good lure there I'd Like to give them a try. I am aware that other brands say they are freeze proof but I've come across damn few I didn't have to doctor up with glycol to use. It can and does get colder then -40 here. I've seen it never warm up past -30 or -40 for weeks at a time.  Coldest so far at my place -65. Pain in the but to tell you truth but we deal with it.

Fishdaddy, Do you just like to argue or do you have nothing better to do? Look this isn't just hear say I've done pretty darn good on Stef's lure's.  I never used Procoon I will say. Use it don't use it I really don't give a damn.  You come on a thread that I started and tell people that these lure's are no good and to use something else. You can have your opinions but I sure don't remember asking you for it or you're advice..

rabies program by a bunch of Quebec trappers- lots of them- working full time for months on end, doing nothing but cage trapping raccoons over a 2 year period. if you have no knowledge of this, thats too bad, but your lack of knowledge means little to the actual occurrance.

as far as your having little success- one then wonders- whats your total success for a year? a decade? a lifetime?

From what I have gathered over the years, not all lures work as well in certain parts of the country as in others.
Before I came out with my MoundMaster beaver lures, I used dozens of those by other makers, and some of the most talked about beaver lures did not work well for me.And some that did,I burned out in very short order
One of the reasons I make my own--I can do what I think needs to be done to them--to keep them working effecively.I make mine a gallon at a time, this process, while time consuming--has served me well.
So when a trapper says some lures do not work well in their area, you have to take them at their word.

Thats as far as this post is going to go. Always liked how few real disagreements we have had on here. Time to get on to other things and quit the squabbling.
