Well guys my eye sight is a changin and Im totaly against using a scoped revolver whats the options cause I love my single sixes .ive taken rabbit ,squirrel ,coyote and alligators even nutria and coons . But im afraid my handgun days will be limited in the next 10 years are so

I'm in a similar position as to the eyes. Right now I'm looking at the reflex or holographic type sights. Haven't decided just how much I want to drop $$ wise, but I've narrowed it down to the Sightron, Burris and possibly Mueller brands. There are some available that aren't to 'big' in size so as to be more pleasing to the eye when mounted.

Check out the Red-dot sights. I use the ultra-dots.

X2 on the ultra dots ~ priced right, waterproof, Lifetime guarranty and demonstrated ability to handle heavy recoil. Not the smallest but not too big/heavy. If rain drop/snow flakes obscures part of the lens, one can locate the red dot to another part of viewing screen/lens.

im in the same boat. Its been a couple years since i could shoot a one inch 25 yard group. My group size on target has about doubled. What does that mean to me? Well i aint quittting hunting with a handgun at least not yet. I detest scopes on handguns so thats not an option. What ive done is reduce my kill range from a 100 yards to 50. If it gets worse i guess i can change that to 25 and hunt like a bowhunter. If it gets worse then that i guess ill just go to a scoped rifle again.

Guess I must be missing something here, but I don't understand why someone would hate scopes or red dots if it meant they can keep on handgun hunting???

Well here my answer to that response.Some of us detest scopes on beautiful single action handguns .Me personally i dont care for plastic stocks I like beautiful wood and craftsmanship but to each his own .So if you would like to scope your handgun well thats great for you but my single actions are staying pure .So its not a matter of why not but it isnt gonna happen in my house podna .I give up handgunning with my single sixes before I scope them .Now that being said there is one Ive seen a stainless model with a satin scope she a beaut!!! But hey I still shot open sighted lever actions tooo

I like to sit by the fire and oil down that blue steel and rub those wood stocks til they have that satin sheen, but when it comes to being in the field and doing what I like to do?

I'm gonna take that stainless steel SBH .41 mag with irons, red dot or scope or bayonet and spend some time in the woods with these 70 year old eyes while some purists are sitting at home oiling that blue steel and rubbing that wood and wishing.

It's all about having fun and doing what we like to do. I like to fly fish too and I have some friends that had rather tie flies and talk about fishing than fish.....go figure.

This company claims that their shooting glasses fix that problem. Check it out at:

I also have a friend who shoots muzzle loaders and has one of those suction cup things that you stick on your glasses. It's like having a peep sight only on your glasses. He swears by them. I think the one he has is made by Merit. Check it out at:

All my guns are scoped so I don't have one yet, but I guess if I start shooting his muzzle loaders, I'll get one. Not sure how effective they would be for hunting though. My friend only shoots at the range.

Yea I looked at those one ragged hole sights before thinking im gonna try out some . Ive seen alot of older gentlemen cowboy action shoot and with open sights maybe gonna confide in them also .

I resently went through this with my 41 mag blackhawk. I put a red dot sight on it even though I really did not want to and was totally unhappy with it. I switched to the one ragged hole sight and I really like that. I am shooting much better than I was with the factory sight and it has not changed the fit and feel of the gun.

I also like my brand new Rolls Royse - but I can`t drive it - because my eyes without glasses - don`t let me to.

In most shooting mags. there is an ad for a merit sight attachment that goes on your shooting glases .Several friends used them to shoot IMHSA . They all loved them , might be a good option to look at ( no pun )

I dont like the look of a sixgun with a scope on it any more than most of you guys but.....................It is the only option that I have any more. I have tried a lot of different things over the past few years but nothing has provided even remotely the degree of accuracy that a scope provides me. I am kidding myself if I think a 12-15 inch group at 25 yards is OK and that is in a day when I can see pretty good. I honestly cant hit the side of a barn even if I am inside it with irons anymore. I feel that I owe the critter I am shooting at a quick and humain kill. I have reached a point in my life that I either hunt with a scope or I don't hunt at all, period. There is no other option for me as I refuse to go out there and just spray the woods with lead hoping I came close to hitting something. Do I like the way my guns look with glasses, HELL NO but it is better than sitting in a rocking chair recalling memories of when I could shoot the irons. If your eyes deteriorate to the point where you need a scope, I say bring on the scope and let's go hunting. Those of you who don't know what I am talking about, enjoy your pristine sixguns while you can. Someday your eyes may get old and tired like mine and you will have to think about sitting on the porch in your rocker remembering the good old days.

Sadly it has pretty much come to that for me too.
I still shoot paper up close with irons, but living animals deserve better.

I don't have a thing against scopes personally. I have a red dot on my Kahnke model 82 and I love that one. It is mounted low close to the barrel and balances well. My blackhawk has the one ragged hole sight and I like it. I did not care for the red dot on my blackhawk because it was mounted so high above the barrel but when my eyes get bad enough it will get a scope. I will do what it takes to shoot well with each one of my firearms and get used to it.

I've a One Ragged Hole on my .45 Blackhawk. It works, it's not as fast for me as as a notch and post but has been fast enough so far. I've a holo sight on my .41 Redhawk I'm really fast with it and shoot as well as I ever have. I'll be the first to say that optics are not too attractive on revolvers. I'm too pragmatic to let looks stand in my way. If I can't use it for it's intended purpose, to me it's useless. To 25 yds. notch and post works fine for me, to maybe 45 yds. the one ragged hole beyond that, well optics it is.

Yea I guees your right .Just figured I would ask here got some real helpful answers and some opinions ......you know what they say about opinions .Far a leaving you car in the garage well even a blind man can find a tree. I'm kinda like Lloyd, I've cut my shooting distances. I am hunting in thick cover and most of my shots are
25-65 yds. If I hunt like I used to bow hunt, I should be good for a few more years.

My 67 year old eyes would probably appreciate a scope on my Redhawk. I have put fiber optic sights on all of my hunting handguns including my .22's. These sights and my bifocals seem to work just fine. I always limit my shots to fifty yards or less. I rarely punch paper so the "kill zone" is good enough for me. I love the looks of an unscoped handgun but do think that a scoped Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley Hunter looks mighty fine. Almost fine enough to add one to my arsenal.

Well I took the advice of a few of the other old farts on this site from a previous thread and picked up a couple red dot sights.

Got to admit yes they work well.

Now all my plinker 22's have them on them and one of my 357's does also.
