The original J-B was simply a very mild (not aggressive) abrasive bore cleaner. It was helpful in removing stubborn fouling and polishing rough bores either new or lightly pitted. The company has changed (expanded) the product line and different products do slightly different jobs.. Afraid I'm not real familiar with the newer products.  Brownells has an explanation in their catalog but I don't have any here just now. Some use this cleaner often but I usually reserve it for rifles with serious fouling problems.

Normal bore cleaning won't remove hard carbon fouling. You have to remove it mechanically, and JB does just that. The thing is, unless you have a bore scope you usually can't see if this fouling is present, or if you have removed it. But JB does indeed work for this, and sometimes significantly improves accuracy after it has been applied. Just as Gun nut says, there is no need to use it all the time, but when you need it it's valuable. BTW, I just got a new can of it, to replace the one I have had for around 10 years. It's Gray now instead of brown, but smells the same and seems to work just fine. I apply it by smearing it on a large patch, which is wrapped around a bronze brush much smaller than the caliber of the barrel. I mark the rod for the ends of its travel, and start scrubbing. Usually I'll do 50 passes each way, then look with the bore scope. I keep this up until the carbon is gone. Sometimes 50 strokes, sometimes thousands. Just depends on what's in there.

Interesting thread....

....so I thought I'd ask.....can you use JB or some Filtz cloth on a new bore rather than do all of the barrel break-in???  The purpose of barrel break-in is to smooth out the lands and grooves from manufacturing and "season" the pores in the steel....so...I read somewhere that 100 strokes of JB and several 5 shot groups will do the trick.

What do you think?????

I almost NEVER fire a shot down the bore until I've cleaned it with JB. I used to do the shoot-clean-shoot-clean routine but have given it up. I think it does smooth a barrel sooner so makes it easier to clean faster but man that's WORK and I don't do four letter words like that.

Now I clean it and shoot a group or three and clean then shoot a group or three. Once I've determined the load a rifle barrel likes and have the rifle sighted in I seldom clean the barrel again until accuracy drops off. Of course you must now your rifle and load capability to do that.

JB is a regular part of my cleaning regimen. I use something like Hoppe's to take out the powder fouling them some Barnes CR10 to take out most of the copper and follow that with JB to get most all that's left gone. I follow that up with CR10 to be sure all the copper is really gone. It usually is. I follow that up with a couple clean dry patches then something milder to remove any traces of CR10 and to help preserve the barrel if it's not to be shot again immediately. I go to a bit more trouble on a rifle I expect to shoot groups down in the half inch or better range than I do a rifle that will be used for big game only tho often the accuracy of my big game rifles is close to what I expect from my varmint rifles anyway.

I read somewhere that 100 strokes of JB

I got in the habit of doing that to my new and new to me guns years ago and it's one of the things I still do.  Clean down to metal as best I can then stroke it with JB.  No scientific analysis but as they say, "it couldn't hurt" and I feel better.   ;D

Hey Doug, did you not see my post to you in the Newffie Moose hunt thread or are you just ignoring me?   :-\  I promise, I haven't ever done any medical malpractice work...  ;)
