Which Handi's are a "must have" in your book?

Which cartridge choices and/or models of Handi's would you say are a "must have" for a Handi owner?

I have too much time on my hands so I mapped out the rifle battery I will begin to build for me and my two teenage sons, as soon as I get working again.

If it had to be only Handis, a small battery would be:

22LR Sportster, 22 Hornet, 357 Mag, 30-06

A battery of 2 would be:

22LR & 30-06 because the 30-06 can be loaded down to 25-06, so you have the entire centerfire gamut covered.

For me , I have a 223 and would love to add a shotgun, either 12 or 20 ga. for a Jeep gun.

My vote is for .357 Maximum.

Most versatile, light recoil, and easy to feed.

It can kill almost everything in North America inside 150 yards. I would not use it for Grizzly Bears or Moose. Those deserve big medicine.



The other keeper is my "improved" Tamer 20ga. It's the perfect grab and go shotgun.

 IN MHO! you need a 30-30 357 mag reamed to a Maxie every bodt neecs a 45-70

 and some thing 22 cal.  and any other  cal. you desred.  Datil

223,280 and the 450 ultra. A guy has to have a big bore to put down them Minnesota whitetails ;D

They are all a must have that's why we are Handiholics. :D

The only two things I would change from Swampys statement is make the 357 mag a MAXIMUM and add a 12Ga!!  ;D

for me it's what i have....357 mag,45 LC,30-30(on the way) and 22lr Sportster. I also prefer the rimmed rounds in the handi and prefer to shoot calibers under 45,000 cup in mine.

Start with a 30-30 if you don't reload. In shotguns, smaller is better, start small. I really think that rimfires are for eccentric Handi lovers.

12 gauge, 30-30, .357 Mag (reamed out Max is ideal), .22 LR, and the flagship of the fleet, the 45/70. These are what I consider the "must haves". Next are a 20 gauge, a 30/06 and/or .280, a .22 Mag, and a .17, either a Mach2 or a HMR, preferably both. If you can, a 7x57 is a great touch, as is the classic field gun, a 16 gauge. And a 28 gauge is nice for youngsters as well as adults....<><....:)

22 inch .45-70, .357 Max, .45LC Carbine, .445 Super, a Pardner 20 ga. and Sportster .22 mag.  I'm happy, I have them all and a .223 on the way.

In my opinion its just one that little is spoken about but one that can do so much.. It is very much the unsung hero in the handi lineup!!

The 12 was my first real duck gun.  I've hopped pond dams before and have have shot and reloaded three times killing 3 ducks before they got out of range.  Great gun.

I am shooting the 12 less and the 20 more lately but the 12 is still the king. If I had to choose one forever it would probably be the 12. I avoid 3" mags and shoot standard velocity 2 3/4" shells 99% of the time and they are plenty for game....<><....:)

I don't hunt ducks or geese and we don't have quail or pheasant, but we do hunt grouse and snowshoe hare in thick cover and the 22 inch Pardner 20 ga. Mod. is superb.  You seldom have an opportunity for a second shot.
It swings fast and easy to carry in brush.  It also shoots rifled slugs and buckshot well.  When I lived in the South, you just about had to have a 12 ga.

12 does it all it you hunt with one gun but what fun is that. I like a specific gun for 12-14oz birds on Tuesdays when the wind is blowing 10mph from SSE.

But "must have" implies a lot of other guns are not available to you.

My "must have" handi list would be a 12 ga and 30-06, which I did not start out with, but recently traded because ammunition for those is available in a wide variety and is available in any sporting goods store, Walmart, hardware store, liquor store, muffler shop, etc.. in the USA, or at least around here.

I'd love a 45-70 barrel and a 30-30 would be nice too. I will get a 20ga ultra slug... Currently just have the 30-06.
