OK Dale, it's running 100% go see a doctor.  First thing I thought was ulcer, but acid reflux can do that as well.  Had a friend that had acid reflux.  Instead of going to see a doc he kept popping Tums.  It finally got so bad they had to remove a portion of his esophagus.  That almost killed him.  He survived, just barely.  Today he is back to normal, luckily.

So now I'll say it to.  GO SEE A DOCTOR.

You want to be around to see that little girl grow up, and get married, don't you?

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

My brother got cancer of the esophagus from acid reflux.  He almost died.  40% of the people that have it don't know it.  I take generic OTC prilosec from Target it's pretty cheap.  After the 1st of the year my insurance will provide Prilosec & Zyrtec for free.

Dale, "GO TO THE DOCTOR!!!!!!!" Right darn NOW. Two reasons I watched my Dad and Mother die from cancer it is UGLY. Second the Democrats are going to mess around with health care and before you know it you might be having one of those "end of life discussions with some board, an thery're tellin you that "well ole hoss, ya got way to many miles on ya an not enough in ya to make it worth our while to fix ya." Will keep you in my prayers.

Hi Dale
I don't know if your a vet or not but VA will provide meds at a reasonable rate. Omeprazole is 24.00 for 180 capsules.  My wife takes them for acid refflux. We are both vets and we save a lot by getting our Rx's from VA.

go to the doc give up the booze and stop looking for opinions on a forum.  Use the money you would use for booze this week.  Or die

I don't know if what my Wife went through might be related, but she had bouts of coughing after meals on and off for ~5 years that the docs couldn't find a cause for. Several months ago a new doc suggested it might be connected to her acid reflux (she's been on Prevacid for a while now). I was sceptical; what could that have to do with it?

Seems that was exactly the problem. Stomach fluids were getting up far enough to enter her windpipe. They put a scope down her esophagus, finding that her stomach was starting to intrude above her diaphragm and the "valve" at that point wasn't working properly. I can't remember the name for it, but it was some "herniated" something or other. She also had some ulceration in that area.

Another test they did was to install a small sensor/transmitter thingie in her esophagus that sent data to a receiver/recorder that she carried for a couple of weeks. (transmitter was passes naturally after the test was done). This gave the doc info on how much and when the acid was coming up.

The treatment for her condition was simple; stay on Prevacid, avoid certain foods/drinks and eat small meals. She's been free of the coughing since she started eating several small meals instead of big ones. She's lost ~15# in the process, getting down to her ideal weight.

We go back in a couple of months for another scope down her throat to see if the ulceration has healed.

Bills were ~$12K, insurance covered all but ~$600.

"It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly, one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts."

Dale I seem to recall I've told you this before and ya ignored it then so you prolly will again this time. You have acid reflux and you have it BAD. It is a life threatening condition if left alone and you big boy have left it alone way too damn long.

Most likely you now have Barrett's esophagus as well. That's when the stomach acid keeps coming up into the esophagus to the point it is eroded away as it is not designed to take stomach acids. Left untreated it becomes cancer 100% of the time. Drinking alcohol is one of the worst things a person with acid reflux can do. You need to get on a prescription med like Prevacid or another and fast. Without insurance it is unbelievably expensive but without it you WILL DIE an earlier and painful death. The choice really is yours now as it was last time I told you this.

You need to see a gastrointestinal specialist and let him take a look down your throat into your stomach and you need to do it SOON. If you are over 40 and have not had a colonoscopy you need that also as you likely have colon polpys and those too if left alone turn to cancer 100% of the time. My younger brother knows now the wisdom of my advice to him to go get checked when I was found to have them. He refused and had colon cancer.

So now what ya gonna do?

EXACTLY RIGHT!!!!!!!
you discribed acid reflux  perfectly, i have it, i take one pill a day for it and have
no problems, it will only get worse if untreated. Stomach acid will kill you.

That sums it up!

If Dale is like many of us here is GA. he can either get health care through an employer, or not at all.  To buy a "private" policy here would cost me over $2000.00 per month.

My dad was a very heavy drinker.  He smoked also.  He developed a small pocket inside his throat that would catch food.  Surgeon removed it and said it looked "angry".  Dad lived ten days.  The cancer went into his brain.  He was 66.

I think I'd have it looked at tomorrow.

I think your referring to a Hiatal Hernia!

Hiatal hernia is a condition in which a portion of the stomach protrudes upward into the chest, through an opening in the diaphragm. The diaphragm is the sheet of muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen. It is used in breathing.

Dale comes up against something he cant handle bout once a week. ::) Im betting if he was to quit smoking , drinking & lose some weight. Maybe take something for heart burn over the counter type. He would be just fine . Sounds simple I know. But he will ignore all this advice & support. At some point he will start puking up blood & it wont stop. His family will call 911 , the paramedics will show up Then his family can watch them do CPR on him.

NO he won't. From this and previous posts it is pretty clear he has a SEVERE case of Acid Reflux. It is a potentially life threatening disorder and does not cure itself. It requires professional medical intervention and proper medication. If you suffered from it you'd understand.

I do agree tho he likely will ignore all advice and support.

not to mention the esophageal erosions and ulcers due to chronic alcoholism and gastric acids.  When it erodes enough and the ulcers bleed excessively, there will be no more to worry about except who will pay for the funeral. Party on

w[W]hy do people knowingly ingage[engage] in self destructive behavior??

Probably many reasons: don't like themselves; gets them attention; learned it from parents, siblings, friends, and others close to them at an impressionable age; can't handle reality; lazy minded; the list goes on.
