I naver had this happen before. I woke last night with a very bad case of heart burn. I kind of threw up a little in my mouth while I was still in bed. I ran to the bathroom and threw up until there was nothing left to come up but blood. It was only a couple tablespoons worth but it has me a little concerned. Dale

....blood in body is good......blood out of body is bad.

I will give an anecdote you may want to consider: years ago I was travelling and found some prickly pear cactuses with fruit on them. The fruit has a very red flesh, if you are not familiar with them. The next day my urine was red. I thought I was in big trouble. The natural pigments of the prickly pears had tinted my urine.

Have you had anything very red lately?

But see the doc. Just consider that question of red foods during your interview with the doc.

Dale, add my opinion to the others. Get to a doc right away!! Don't try to tough this one out. You don't know what's going on inside, and it may be serious. Or not. Best find out now, for sure, and get it taken care of. Best wishes for a good outcome with your health problem, and a Happy New Year as well.

Dale - all of the previous responses are right on the mark, Get to a doctor.

The reason of its seriousness is because the blood is coming internally. If it is in your stomach it could be a beginning of a bleeding ulcer. If it is coming from deep in your throat you could have some varicose veins in the wall of the throat that are leaking. The risk with either of these conditions is that they suddenly enlarge causing uncontrolled bleeding.

Until a doc gets you diagnosed stay away from any alcohol.....it will only aggravate whatever you have.

Dale get to the doc asap. Could be many things, thinning of the esophogus from alcohol could be part of it, or a bleeding ulcer.

Dale I seem to recall I've told you this before and ya ignored it then so you prolly will again this time. You have acid reflux and you have it BAD. It is a life threatening condition if left alone and you big boy have left it alone way too damn long.

Most likely you now have Barrett's esophagus as well. That's when the stomach acid keeps coming up into the esophagus to the point it is eroded away as it is not designed to take stomach acids. Left untreated it becomes cancer 100% of the time. Drinking alcohol is one of the worst things a person with acid reflux can do. You need to get on a prescription med like Prevacid or another and fast. Without insurance it is unbelievably expensive but without it you WILL DIE an earlier and painful death. The choice really is yours now as it was last time I told you this.

You need to see a gastrointestinal specialist and let him take a look down your throat into your stomach and you need to do it SOON. If you are over 40 and have not had a colonoscopy you need that also as you likely have colon polpys and those too if left alone turn to cancer 100% of the time. My younger brother knows now the wisdom of my advice to him to go get checked when I was found to have them. He refused and had colon cancer.

So now what ya gonna do?

Regardless of current circumstances it is important to realize that brighter days are likely ahead so it is worth preparing for them. If you don't you may not be around to enjoy them.

you discribed acid reflux perfectly, i have it, i take one pill a day for it and have
no problems, it will only get worse if untreated. Stomach acid will kill you.

I will have to put off going to the ER until tomorrow. I have to pick my mother up in Pittsburgh today. They are releasing her from the mental ward today. That is a long and different story. Depending on the time I get back from getting her I may go today. I do relise this needs addressed. Dale

The ER is only gonna cost ya money but do nothing for you. Get an appointment with a gastro intestinal specialist as soon as possible. He can determine the extent of your problem and proper treatment. The ER will not and your situation is not IMMEDIATELY life threatening so the ER isn't the right place to go. There is really nothing they can or will do for you that will justify the cost.

GB is right on this. When you call the GI specialist, tell them you have been throwing up blood and they will usually get you in very quickly.

Good luck and prayers, Dale. FWIW I have a couple of friends who had severe acid reflux, and with proper treatment they have recovered and are just fine now. Hope that is what it is because it is not hard to treat....

Dadgumit Dale, I hate to hear that, the blood you could not help, the lack of insurance is a decision!

I'm sorry to hear about both, I hope the money you saved from not buying insurance was saved for a rainy Day.

I'll Say some prayers for your trip to the doctor which should be ASAP!

I'm no doctor but check to see if you have a Dark stool, which means blood there too!

Get to a doctor on this one (and I'll agree - ER is a bad idea unless you feel like there's an immediate problem). Don't mean to worry you but heartburn + throwing up blood can be a sign of serious esophageal problems.

Since he has bragged so much on his garden the past couple years I suspect it hasn't been that long TM7.

Ulcers are a posibility of course but this isn't the first time he's posted of his symptoms and last time and this one as well points to a severe case of acid reflux most likely compounded by Barrett's esophagus. Poor diet habits, alcohol, smoking and over weight are contributing but not causal factors for Dale.

I do agree you absolutely must not eat preferably for four hours before bed and you will learn what you can't eat sooner or later and if you ignore that you will pay for it believe me that's first hand knowledge speaking. Yes there are excellent medications that in time will stop the symptoms so long as you do the other things necessary to go along with it. They are seriously expensive without good health insurance. I pay $65 every three months for mine and I'm told it's at least $3 to $5 a day without insurance. If as I suspect you are told you have Barrett's esophagus then depending on the severity of it you might have to go on the new "purple pill" I can never think of the name of it when I want to, that is supposed to cure the condition. Mine was not bad enough to require it but the pills I take "Prevacid" don't cure Barrett's but do control acid reflux and if the stomach acids stop coming up into the throat then at least it gets no worse and perhaps in time begins to heal naturally.

Dale, if it is reflux, ask the Dr. for samples. Tell him you have no prescription coverage. Second, call the drug manufacturer, and ask for help. Sometimes they will sell to you at a reduced rate.......I had the same situation for several years with some of my meds.

The purple pill is Nexium. It's very, very similar to Prilosec in function and chemical structure. Arguably just a bit better but according to my doctor Prilosec was "just as good" (I take the generic form of Prilosec, which is sold as "Omeprazole"). The same company makes them both and they just changed the structure a little and repantented Nexium after their patent on Prilosec expired.

The generic Omeprazole I buy over the counter, and I think it's $25 for 48 of them (1 per day). Insurance would cover it but only if bought from the pharmacy, which costs more and the price ends up evening out (I checked with both my doctor and the pharmacist and they both confirmed that they were the same pills - just different packaging).

Yup that's the one, for some reason I just can't ever think of that name when I want to. I've never taken that one. I started out on Prilosec then was switched to Prevacid. I sure didn't realize they had dropped the cost of Prilosec that much since it going OTC. They now have a version of Prevacid OTC as well. I'm not sure if that means it is no longer available by prescription of if the Prevacid 24 is a lesser dose. It sure isn't as cheap as you say Prilosec is for now. If I have to buy it OTC it will almost triple my cost based on what I'm seeing it going for locally. I have to find out soon as it's close to time to call the doctor for a new script, it's also time for another colonoscopy perhaps next month.
