A little bird told me that...
« on: December 31, 2009, 03:44:14 AM »
Current issue of THE ARTILLERYMAN has an article on the deteriorating bronze cannons at the Washington Navy Yard, with some "before" and "after" photos, how people had written letters which remain unanswered, etc. etc.

As you know I've been interested in this so I will have to contact the publisher to get a copy, my subscription lapsed back when.

But it isn't like I know nothing about it, THE ARTILLERYMAN did interview me in the course of preparing their article.

This Navy Yard thing is a long-term project, but I can guarantee we'll get results eventually.  It is just a matter of getting the right people in Congress interested as they are the only ones who have a stick big enough to beat the Navy into submission on this.

Just got my copy and the article is a good one and the photos are excellent and clearly show the conditions described.  I second Dan's comment, John, and if anyone is interested in reading about this and other interesting articles about artillery and cannons, they should contact the Artilleryman magazine at the following link to get a subscription.  After all, it's the ONLY magazine devoted entirely to our hobby!

Just do it!

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

On their subscription link they have a "request a free sample issue," which I just sent.  Nice to see the option to try before you buy.  Plus, they'll proably send the current issue, which would have this article in it! ;)

Yes I did re-subscribe this AM as soon as I found out the article had come out.  I'm tempted to get extra copies and send them to all members of the HASC and SASC (the Congressional Armed Services Committies which approve the Navy's annual funding.)
