I SHOULD know what this is...
« on: December 31, 2009, 04:12:41 AM »
I recognise it, but cannot place it... I THINK its a cut down and reshaped Garand bayonet. With the guts removed. What do you guys say???

Looks like a shortened version of the M-1 bayonets I had.

I'm not into knives, but it seems to me the M1 bayonet was longer. It can't be shortened because tge blood groove ends where it's supposed to. How about an M14 or 16 bayonet. I was issued both but can't remember. Somebody did a real nice job reshaping.

Garand to me.
Looks like the blood groove extends into the cut down angle.
The button by the guard that has been removed that of a  Garand if I am not mistaken.
Gentleman in our gun club was issued a Garand with a cut down bayonet when he was in the service, the blood groove did not terminate but extended to the cut down angle.
Best wishes,  :)

Hey Bri!

I don't think there's much doubt that they're cut down bayonets.  I believe the original, Model 1905 I think, (Springfield) bayonet had the same style grip but the handles were wood not plastic.  The later version for the early Garand and Remington '03s and 03A3's (also an 18 inch blade) had plastic grips, and many were cut down to 10" and reissued.  I could tell you for sure since I have 1 or 2 of each original version, but I would never pay for a cut one... I have seen them reshaped with both clip and spear point blades and even some cut to 6 inches!

Did they polish off the markings on the blade just ahead of the handguard ( the actual terminology escapes me at the moment...  :-\  happens a lot lately...  :'( )

Yes, everything has or appears to have been polished off, the blade er, entire knife has no markings on it what so ever...

I have put on about 10-12, but muscle is heavier then fat!!  I lost quite a bit of muscle mass as fast as I lost the weight last year. I got down to just about 205 back in July. I have been pretty active and now I am 215, but still in a 34" waist, so I ain't too worried. I was always a bigger guy. Back in high school I graduated 6' with a 33" waist and tipping the scales at 260lb. Wrestled unlimited and we went all state, with a undefeated senior year!!

The big man upstairs called me home then changed his mind... hope he doesn't call again for many years to come.

Okay, here we go...  PICTURES!  I told you I work at my own pace!  ;D

'course, now I done forgot what the original questions was...  :-[

The 2 shorter ones are the 10 inch Garand Bayonets.  These were not dated by the manufacturer.  The next plastic handled, long bayonet is dated 1942 and was used on Springfields and Garands.  The last is a Springfield bayonet dated 1918.  Many of the long bayonets were cut down and finished with either a clip or spear point.

Like most things we treasure so much nowadays, bayonets used to be plentiful and cheap.  People did lots of different things with them!  Hence your curios!   ;D
