We're having deep fried Lake Erie perch,purple cole slaw(what I have left from the garden),onion rings,garlic bread. Not sure where I heard it, but some culture's believe that fish brings good luck for the new year. And with some of my heritage being German, something with cabbage in it is suppose to bring good luck.(I know saurkraut and sausage is on the list)
Just wondering if anybody else has a tradional New Years eve dinner?? I hope everbody has a safe,healthy,profitable New Year!! gypsyman

We're vistiting friends and we usually each bring something. Main entree is usually a hearty soup of some kind.

In the south I have been told you have to eat Black Eyed Peas for good luck!!!!

We will be having pork and sauerkraut tomorrow -- unless I can convince my wife to switch to corned beef and cabbage!

Pork chops, green beans and taters, mac and cheese, and rolls. We don't have a traditional New Year's Eve dinner this is just what I had thawed...lol, but we do have a traditional dessert...at least for the last 6 years....Birthday Cake and Ice Cream! Our second oldest son, Evan, will turn 7 at a few minutes after midnight tonight.

I have tried to like black eyed peas, but never liked them. I like red beans and rice though. It would be a good substitute.

Good thread Gypsyman.... always like to talk about cooking and eating.
Just took the first batch of ribs out of the smoker..... had a taste, and the dry rub is right on. Cold and windy here, and hard to keep the wood burning just right, and have to close the dampers down and run it on the cool side. By tonight, we'll have a good pile of them done. Cole slaw, bread and butter, and peppers we canned.

Seems like pickled herring is the good luck food for midnight?

I'm not in the south. I'm in the sunny southwest but we still gotta have blackeyed peas and cornbread. Um, um, good. Supposed to bring you good luck the rest of the year. I haven't ever noticed that being true but I like 'em and eat 'em every chance I get.

Here (SC) it's not black-eyed peas specifically, but "hop n'jon", which is a rice dish made with black eyed peas.

Hop n' jon for good luck, and greens to bring money for the next year

(most people around here do collards or mustard greens, but I don't like either, so I'll usually do cabbage or spinach instead

I just made hop-n-john a few weeks ago. I threw it out, and I fed the black eyed peas I had left over to the birds. Yecch!

Bratwurst and saurer kraut, mashed taters, pickled beets. Get to be home alone, and thankful for it. Past week at work with snivelin, whining, bickering employees has left me tired and unsociable. Gonna open something bubbly at midnight and eat schrimp with the dogs, and marvel at the blue moon lunar eclipse. Don't see too many of those combinations.

For about the past ten years we get together with two or three other couples. Generally, fillet Mignon, lobster tails, shrimp is on the menu. For desert, a chocolate lava cake fresh out of the oven W real fresh whipped cream, just before midnight.

This year, we are changing things up.. HEART HEALTHY!!! (My heart attack last January caused this) Grilled Chicken, lasagna with fat free cheeses and ground turkey salads and fruit for desert. Hope its good, I REALLY miss the traditional dinner...

Ya'll do realize that rat now today is New Year's Eve right? Tomorrow is New Year's Day and that's the day of traditional meals not today.

We have a huge smoked ham, beans are soaking now a half and half combination of pinto and great northern beans and we'll have rolls as well. No black eyed peas for me tho Faye and Phil do like them and no dang ham hocks either I'll take a 20+ pound ham thank you.

We generally eat supper around 5:00 to 6:00 depending on when I finish checking the forums and send an e-mail to Barry up in PA. Breakfast is at 9:00 give or take a few minutes, no lunch as such and then supper when I'm done with the internet for the afternoon.

We are going to a big New Years Eve party this evening. I've already supplied a big Moose roast, with instructions on how to cook it to the lady that's doing most of the cooking. I'm taking the Egg Nog, and Boiled Custard.

Man you gotta have blackeyed peas new years day not new years eve,
maybe you should get a southern cook book.
It is hard to beat blackeyed peas, cooked with, salt pork or ham hocks
corn bread, you can even put some jalapenos in the corn bread.

I thought i was the only one that mixed Great northerns and pintos
but got to have blackeyed peas new years day.

Tonight it was feral hog ribs off the smoker, black eyed peas, taters and red wine. Tomorrow is the big day, smoker still smokin.

Before my best friend Billy Doss died we used to smoke like that at his place for the holidays, most all the major holidays in fact. He had a huge smoker lined with fire bricks inside and made with red bricks outside. He used a huge floor furnace grate for the cooking surface. It held a passel of meats and we cooked over a wood fire. We sat up all night keeping the fire going but not too hot. We'd move the meats around as needed and kept the fire to one side mostly away from them and tossed in water as needed to cool it down and make steam when it got too hot. It was an all night affair and we had some mighty fine vittles to eat while we waited on the hams, boston butts and turkeys to smoke until done and falling off the bone.

I sure miss those days and most of all I miss my best friend.

We ate about half the ribs, the rest go in the crock pot all night, be a fine appetizer. Around here any holiday is most likely to be some kind of good meal cooking.

Even though I am only 53 I have lost some good friends too. Causes me to think too much sometimes.
