Well folks it has been a good run but after 23 years I am done...

I made the decision Sunday that the cigarette companies and Alabama law makers no longer want my money so... I am done.

I am tired of spending $5.00+ on a pack of smokes and now they have the FSC smokes here in Bama which I just cant smoke...

No patch no pill no gum... I just quit....

And for those of you who are still smoking.... I hope you can find the non FSC smokes as the new ones can not be good for you... not that they were to begin with... but when they say " No Significant increase in toxins" you better watch out....

Matt I quit 3 mths ago. It flat out sucked the first week or so. After that it was easy. You,re gonna feel so much better. I had to keep telling myself " If I keep smoking , Im taking my kids dad away from them way too soon. " I want to go hunting with my boy,Hes 2 years old I want to see my girls get married, their 8 years old. Good luck my friend. Its worth it Jay

I keep telling myself he will be healthier, but when will he be NICE again???

I did it that way. It worked for me. It will work for you. Good decision!

Once I made up my mind, that was it. The only thing I had was an occasional thought like "isn't it about time for a cigarette?" at times like my usual time for a cigarette on the way to work or on the way home from work. But I just said "No. I don't smoke anymore". And in a few weeks I quit having those thoughts and have never wanted once since. That was 18 years ago.

Every now and then I catch a whiff of tobacco smoke and think how I used to smoke, but I don't want one.

I quit my pipe in 1984. Was in the VA hospital in Pittsburgh for plastic surgery and they had me in the ENT ward. Everyone else on that ward was dying of something I could not put my finger on. Was sitting on the bed smoking my pipe when the cute black nurse came by. Asked her what was wrong with all those guys. "They are dying from smoking and I suggest that pipe is going to kill you." My answer: "i suggest that it will not." Cleaned the pipe, discarded the ashes in the butt can and threw pipe, makings and lighter into the trash. That young lady most likely saved my life.

I quit 16 yrs ago. Watch the snacks....and you'll be fine. So what if you get tempermental. Its only temporary, guaranteed. Your brain just needs time to re-adjust. Tell your spouse you'll put a quarter in a jar everytime you snap at her. She'll be rich, and you'll be healthier.

Good luck Matt. It can be a hard task quitting but ultimately you will be a lot healthier for it. I lost my grandmother to lung cancer due to smoking when I was 7 and believe me it hit me hard.

Just out of curiosity though - what is a "FSC" cigarette?

I'm trying to talk him into coming to karate with me, but he is hesitant for some reason.

You can get pretty good machines without the bowflex name for good prices. I setup a multi-workout machine for my brother a few years back. He paid either $200 or $250 for it (a lot less than a Bowflex). It was cable + plate weight driven rather than the rod things, but overall was a nice machine. Would let you do all sorts of different exercises. You could get something like that + a free weight bench + a stationary bike + a treadmill for less than the Bowflex

I personally just maintain a gym membership. It's only like $20 per month and they have a ton of different machines to use (and the girls walking around are some nice eye candy

). Sadly I've gotten lazy and haven't been in a few months, but for a while I was going 3-4 times per week.

Matt I thought about quitting too.Told the wife it was more sex or cigs.She asked"What brand did I want her to pick up?".Still smoking,but about to do the cold turkey.I told my Mom just before she died that i would quit.It was a year ago in November,Tonight is the night.I've timed the amount of smokes to the minute.I'll be out at midnight and then I too will be a non smoker.Our Govenour here in kansas is going to raise the txes some eighty cents a pack.I'm going to boycot the tax raise.It's the least i can do.Slow

Well I have wanted to quit for several years now but just never had the motivation to do it. The new FSC smokes hurt my chest so bad that I found some motivation. For those that don't know what FSC stands for it is "Fire Safe Cigarettes" which to me is an "oxymoron".

I have noticed over the last few years that my lung capacity has diminished at a rapid rate and I get winded from most anything physical. At 37 I just don't think it is a good thing and for sure it limits me and I am just tired of it. I think about the looming demise of the USA and wonder how will I protect my family if I have to take a break every few minutes to catch my breath. I figure I am rapidly running out of time to get into shape and figure there is no time like the present... so motivation found....

If you want to exercise for getting into better shape that's great. BUT! I tried all kinds of pacifiers trying to quit smoking. So one day, much like Matt has done only for different reasons, I said: I quit! There is nothing in a tobacco product that is good for me, why the hell do I keep doing it. I came to the conclusion that it was a weakness in my character, and that alone offended me. SO! I QUIT!

Matt, Congratulations on getting the monkey off your back. My prayers are with you, I know you have a tough road ahead for a while anyway. In the long run you will be glad you did. Heck with the money you save you could take an extra vacation or buy yourself a new toy.

Heather, I would be leery of going to Karate class with you also... I know what you do to little girls I'd hate to think what you would do to a grown man.

I quit 5 weeks ago. The Dr. said my heart attack was a warning. He also said if I were not going to quit to get a new Dr. as he didn't like his patients dead. I've smoked well over 40 years. It's still tough, but if I can make it this long, I can make it. So can you.

Memo to Heather........be especially nice for a few days. For both your sakes.

Hang in there Matt, my wife quit cold turkey also - that was 4 yrs ago. It was tough on her but she is a trooper and pulled through.

I used to enjoy a cigar once a week, but when my wife said she was quitting I put down the cigars and never went back.

We both are healthier for it now.

Believe it or not guys I don't want a cigarette... I have a great ability to make instant changes in my way of thinking and never look back. I have done this with many different things over the years to include drugs, alcohol and more. When I decide thats it, it really is... I have been in the room with people smoking the last few days and it does not bother me at all. It does stink a bit at first but after a few minutes I don't even smell it. I don't have the urge when I get up to smoke or after I eat. The only thing that is sucking right now is I can feel the crude breaking up in my chest but no matter how much I cough it wont come up. I figure that will go away after a month or so... maybe...

The only side effect I have noticed is I am a bit more hyper and looking for something to do. It seems to be getting a little harder to sit still and my mind feels like the brakes have been released... I guess it is the nicotine withdrawals and it should pass soon enough.

And Brett she already uses me as her "Heavy Bag" so it wont be any different there.. but now I might be able to last more than just a few minutes against all those dang twist kicks and jump spin kicks...

What you mean NICE AGAIN? I've known him a bit over 37 years and never known him to be nice so far, maybe once for about five minutes when he was asleep but that was only once and he wasn't yet six months old then.

Yeah but the difference was I really didn't want to quit then and had no real motivation to quit.... and it was more like a half dozen not 50 old man...

Ha! Sounds like me, and my boy!

I quit 20 years ago cold turkey, and never took another drag! The only difference I noticed was the morning cough went away.I was a pack to pack and a half a day smoker. I never really wanted another after the first week. I still drank a little back then and thought I would want one, while drinking a beer, but it didn't matter.I quit the booze a couple of years later, and now I'm perfect!

Every time you feel the urge, think about how each pack you buy supports big government through the taxes on each pack.

If tobacco were discovered today the government would have it classified as a controlled substance. The only reason it is not outlawed is because of the cash cow it is for government.

Good on you Matt January 7th make three years for me after smoking 37 years. I used a product called Chantix doctor prescrbed and it works. Most insurances pays for it as it is cheaper for them now then big bills later. I have more wind now plus I smell better as the folks will tell ya. Stale smoke really stinks, Good luck you can do it. About 36 years ago I found myself having much difficulty hiking at high altitudes while hunting. I would climb uphill about 20 yards and have to stop in order to regain my breath. I decided to stop smoking. I had tried unsuccessful before so after thinking it over I decided to make a list of the reasons I wanted to stop.
When I stopped and my thinking was not so good I referred back to the list to keep motivated. Every day gets a little easier so if you remember tomorrow will be easier than today it gets easier to deal with. One trick I used was taking 5 to 10 deep breaths at a time and it was just like having a beer the oxygen would produce a feeling similar to having a beer. You can do that any time you want to.
It worked for me. I wish you the best luck in quitting the tobacco.
